Beef Fry

A Symphony of Flavors

For someone who loves to experiment and draw inspiration from different cuisines, the Beef Fry evokes a sense of culinary exploration. Its complex flavor profile is one that echoes the rich culinary heritage of India. Inspired by none other than the talented Vikas Gupta, a culinary genius who’s known for his finesse with Indian flavors, this recipe follows a similar pathway yet arrives at a unique end that is all its own.

A Universal Pairing

One can’t help but appreciate the Beef Fry’s versatility. It pairs wonderfully with an array of accompaniments. For a traditional Indian feast, this dish works beautifully with fragrant Basmati rice or warm, fluffy naan bread. However, it can just as easily steal the show when served alongside a simple salad or even some rustic garlic bread, melding the flavors of two cultures in one meal.

Being a Louisiana native, my inclination towards hearty dishes like the Beef Fry is greatly influenced by the Creole culture inherent to my hometown. And as someone with French ancestry, I have a deep appreciation for intricate flavors akin to this Indian masterpiece. Just as you can’t separate beignets from New Orleans or éclairs from Paris, Indian Beef Fry stands as an entity in itself, deeply emblematic of the cuisine from which it originates.

Every time I prepare this recipe, it feels like a journey – a delightful sensorial exploration that ends in an irresistibly flavorful destination. I hope by sharing this Indian Beef Fry recipe, I’ll spark an adventure within you, venturing into new culinary territories and discovering just how fulfilling that journey can be. Bon appétit!

What You’ll Need

  • 2.5 lbs of Beef chunks
  • 3 tablespoons Coconut oil
  • 2 teaspoons Turmeric powder
  • 2 tablespoons Chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons Coriander powder
  • 2 tablespoons Garam masala
  • 6 cloves of Garlic, minced
  • 2 inch piece of Ginger, minced
  • 3 Green chilies, sliced
  • 2 large Onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Mustard seeds
  • 4 sprigs Curry leaves
  • 2 cups of Coconut slices
  • Salt to taste
ALLERGENS: Beef, Coconut oil, Garlic, Mustard seeds

Method

Step One

Heat 3 tablespoons of coconut oil in a large pan over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the mustard seeds and wait for them to crackle.

Step Two

Add the finely chopped onions to the pan, followed by the minced garlic, ginger, and sliced green chilies. Saute these ingredients until the onions become soft and translucent.

Step Three

Next, add the 2 tablespoons each of turmeric powder, chili powder, coriander powder, and garam masala to the pan. Stir well to combine the spices with the sauteed ingredients, making sure all the spices are well distributed.

Step Four

Add the 2.5 lbs of beef chunks into the pan. Cook the beef chunks on medium heat until they’re well coated with the spices and start to brown.

Step Five

Add the 2 cups of coconut slices and the curry leaves to the pan, stirring well. If needed, add enough water to the pan to prevent the mixture from burning.

Step Six

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let the beef cook for about 45 minutes, or until it becomes tender.

Step Seven

Once the beef is cooked, sprinkle some salt to taste and give it a good mix. Fry for another couple of minutes, turning the beef occasionally until it becomes a dark brown color.

Step Eight

Remove from heat and serve your beef fry hot with your choice of bread or rice for a delightful meal.
