From down south in Charleston where I grew up, we savor every bite and simple pleasure when it comes to food. In every dish lies a memory and mine is no exception: introducing the Turmeric Potato Chips. A dazzling blend of Southern comfort and exotic spice, these golden morsels are a delight for the senses.

A Modern Twist on an Old Favorite

Here in the South, fried potato chips hold a certain nostalgia. We’ve taken this classic and given it a healthful and flavorful twist. The turmeric, reminiscent of the magic dust sprinkled onto the coastal seafood I enjoy catching, renders the chips a captivating golden hue and imparts an exciting burst of flavor. Not to mention, the turmeric gives these chips an antioxidant boost, something not usually associated with traditional potato chips.

While reminiscent of the classic Southern fried potato chip, these Turmeric Potato Chips bring an innovative edge to the table. We’re keeping the much-loved crunch and simplicity of the original recipe, but dressing it up with a dash of inventiveness.

Pairings and Complementing Flavors

These chips stand their ground when savored alone. But as the Southern saying goes, ‘the more, the merrier.’ They pair perfectly with coastal seafood dishes, especially with a serving of fried chicken. My homemade Southern biscuits and these chips create a harmonious blend of crunch and fluffiness, and of course, pure Southern comfort.

The peppy flavor of the turmeric also beautifully compliments a comforting bowl of ham and potato soup or a hearty dish of Boston baked beans. And if you’re thinking about picnics or outdoor get-togethers, these chips are just the show-stoppers you need!

A Lesser-Known Health Marvel

Granted, potato chips aren’t usually associated with health benefits, but that’s why I love these golden treats even more. The vibrant turmeric doesn’t just give these chips their appealing color; it’s a veritable health powerhouse. Packed full of antioxidants, turmeric can aid in reducing inflammation and even boost brain function. The olive oil used in this recipe is not just for frizzling up these chips but is also a wonderful source of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.

So, why do I love these Turmeric Potato Chips? Because they display the simplicity and fulfilling comforts of Southern food with a beautiful twist of spice and vitality. Now, it’s time for you to fall in love with them too.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 large potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon paprika (optional)
ALLERGENS: Potatoes

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). While the oven is heating up, wash and dry the potatoes thoroughly. Slice them thinly with a knife or a mandolin slicer.

Step Two

Place the potato slices in a large bowl. Add the turmeric powder, salt, black pepper, and olive oil. If you’re using paprika, add it in as well. Toss everything together until the slices are evenly coated with the spices and oil.

Step Three

Arrange the potato slices in a single layer on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Make sure they don’t overlap to ensure even cooking.

Step Four

Place the tray in the preheated oven and bake for about 10-15 minutes, or until the chips are golden brown and crispy. The exact cooking time may vary depending on the thickness of the slices and your oven, so keep an eye on them.

Step Five

Remove the chips from the oven and let them cool on the tray for a few minutes. This will make them even crispier. Your Turmeric Potato Chips are now ready to be enjoyed as a healthy and delicious snack.
