When it comes to recipes that marry tradition and innovation, my White Pepper and Orange Glazed Salmon checks every box. The sweetness of the orange, mingled with the nuanced heat of white pepper, creates a flavor profile that I often say is Nebraska with a twist. While many may associate Nebraska with corn casseroles and beef stews, we also appreciate a light and flavorful dish teeming with nutritional value. This recipe happens to be one of my favorites, not only for its taste but also for the health benefits inherent in its ingredients.
The Farm-to-Table Connection
Coming from a heartland state where farm-to-table is more than just a trend, I’ve always loved incorporating fresh, seasonal ingredients into my recipes. Looking at the orange in this White Pepper and Orange Glazed Salmon, you can’t help but appreciate the freshness it brings. Citrus fruits like oranges are not only excellent sources of vitamins A and C but they also aid in digestion and offer a host of other health benefits. I recommend using freshly squeezed orange juice to really capture that farm-to-table freshness.
A Complementary Dance of Flavors
One of the things I absolutely adore about this recipe is the subtle interplay between the white pepper and the orange glaze. There’s a delightfully unexpected heat from the white pepper which is then balanced by the sweet and tangy orange glaze. Those familiar with Spicy Salmon Teriyaki might find some parallels in flavor combinations.
Of course, our salmon recipe is ready to steal the spotlight on its own, but it’s also versatile enough to pair with various dishes. I’ve served it alongside a Curried Couscous Salad with Dried Cranberries for something quick and refreshing or with Roasted Vegetable Orzo for a heartier pairing. These sides help to enhance the sweet and savory aspects of the salmon dish, creating a complete meal that sings in perfect harmony.
From my kitchen to yours, I hope this recipe offers you not just a nourishing meal, but also a narrative of Midwestern comfort translated to contemporary tastes. Enjoy!
What You’ll Need
- 6 salmon fillets, 6 ounces each
- 1 teaspoon of white pepper
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Juice of 2 large oranges, freshly squeezed
- Zest of 1 large orange
- 2 tablespoons of honey
- 1 teaspoon of cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons of cold water
- Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish
- Orange slices, for garnish
Method
Step One
Start by seasoning your salmon fillets with white pepper and salt to taste. Make sure each fillet is well coated.
Step Two
Preheat your pan with 2 tablespoons of olive oil on medium heat. Once heated, place your salmon fillets skin side down and cook for about 3-4 minutes each side depending on thickness. When done, remove from the pan and set aside.
Step Three
In the same pan, add the minced garlic and sauté for a minute until it becomes fragrant. Then, pour in the freshly squeezed orange juice, orange zest and honey. Mix well and let it simmer until it has reduced to half its initial quantity.
Step Four
In a small bowl, mix together the cornstarch and cold water until there are no lumps. Slowly pour this into the pan while stirring continuously. This will help thicken up your orange glaze. Continue to simmer another 2-3 minutes until the sauce has thickened.
Step Five
Place your cooked salmon fillets back into the pan and spoon the orange glaze over the fillets. Let it simmer for another minute ensuring the salmon is well coated with the glaze.
Step Six
Finally, remove the pan from the heat. Garnish your White Pepper and Orange Glazed Salmon with fresh parsley and orange slices on top right before serving. Enjoy your meal while it’s still warm.
