Stirring up the Landang seeds with a vibrant blend of fruit in my Fruit Salad with Landang, I’m transported back to weekends spent in my Irish grandparents’ kitchen. Sweet, nutritious, and full of color, there’s just something special about this not-so-typical fruit salad that gets me every time.

Fruit Salad with Landang

Irish Influence Meets Wholesome Ingredients

Perhaps it’s the nostalgia of those memories, but this recipe also holds an affectionate place in my heart for more than just tradition. The Fruit Salad with Landang takes me on a culinary journey from Boston to Ireland, knitting together my love for New England fruits and Irish flair for comfort. This salad is not your average bowl of mixed fruits. The kitchen, filled with the tantalizing aroma of fresh strawberries, mangoes, apples, coupled with the earthiness of mint leaves, is a sensory feast.

The Surprising Health Benefits

It’s not just the taste, but the health benefits that make this recipe a true winner in my book. The star of the bowl, the Landang also known as basil seeds, have been linked to potential health benefits like improved blood sugar control and appetite suppression. Plus, the mix of fruits offers an incredible nutrient payload, including antioxidants and digestive-friendly fibers. Of course, I tend to use less sugar, staying mindful of my family’s health and the sweet natural flavors of the fresh fruits.

For those unfamiliar with Landang seeds, don’t fret – they’re easily sourced online or in your local health food store. If you’re familiar with chia pudding, making a fruit salad with Landang will seem pretty intuitive.

The Perfect Complement to Any Meal

Whether it’s a lazy weekend brunch with Laura and our baby boy, or a bustling dinner party, the Fruit Salad with Landang never disappoints. It complements almost any savory dish, striking the right balance of sweet freshness. Take for example, a pan-seared halibut dish, the light, fruity flavors of the salad make for a refreshing contrast.

The next time you’re hankering for a fruit salad, why not give this recipe a try? Thinking outside the ordinary fruit salad ‘bowl’, you might just find a new family favorite. Plus, you get to introduce everyone to the wonderful world of Landang seeds.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups of Landang (Basil Seeds)
  • 3 cups of water
  • 1 cup of sliced strawberries
  • 1 cup of chopped mangoes
  • 1 cup of chopped apples
  • 1 cup of pitted and halved cherries
  • 1 cup of sliced bananas
  • 1/2 cup of fresh orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnishing
ALLERGENS: Basil Seeds, strawberries, mangoes, apples, cherries, bananas, orange juice, sugar, lemon juice

Method

Step One

Start by taking a medium sized bowl. Pour the basil seeds (Landang) into it, followed by 3 cups of water. Stir them together and let it rest for about 30-40 minutes until the basil seeds have absorbed the water and become jelly like.

Step Two

While the basil seeds are soaking, proceed to prepare the fruits. Wash and cut the strawberries, mangoes, apples, cherries and bananas into bite sized pieces. After getting all your fruits ready, place them in a large salad bowl.

Step Three

Once the basil seeds are ready, drain off any excess water and add them to the salad bowl containing the chopped fruits. Toss gently to combine.

Step Four

In a separate small bowl, combine the fresh orange juice, sugar, and lemon juice. Stir well until all the sugar is dissolved. This will be your salad dressing.

Step Five

Pour the salad dressing over the fruit and basil seed mixture in the salad bowl. Toss gently to ensure all the fruits are well coated with the dressing.

Step Six

Garnish with fresh mint leaves before serving. Your Fruit Salad with Landang is ready to enjoy!
