Homemade Yarrow Tea

The Beauty of Balance

This beautiful vitality-restoring tea is a classic study in harmony. Much like the Afro-Southern culinary fusion championed in my kitchen, it finds a perfect equilibrium between the tangy sweetness of raw honey and juiced lemons, and the earthy, slightly bitter notes of dried yarrow flowers. A generous scattering of fresh fruit slices to garnish lends a vibrant pop of colour and an added layer of fresh, juicy flavour. To the unacquainted, I often like to describe this brew as borrowing the restorative nature of clear broths, the toning attributes of tisanes, and the zestiness of lemonade recipes. For the fellow Atlanta folk who enjoy a glass of iced tea with soul food or barbecue, this homemade yarrow tea would slip effortlessly into your hearts!

The Bounty of Health Benefits

In addition to its delightful taste, this Homemade Yarrow Tea Recipe makes a deep contribution to wellness. Yarrow, an herb heralded as a medicinal superstar in various cultures across centuries, is famous for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. Meanwhile, the honey and lemon in the recipe bring their own health-supporting attributes to the table, making this beverage as nourishing as it is delicious – the holy grail if you will!

You can find the yarrow flower used in this recipe in select online stores, but if you’re lucky enough to have a local herb supplier or a home garden, make sure to use them. Nothing beats the freshness of locally sourced ingredients.

And while you’re at it, why not consider pairing this tea with a hearty jambalaya, or Nigerian jollof rice? The zestiness of the tea wonderfully cuts through the richness of these dishes, while supplementing the meal with a dose of wellness. Tea and comfort food – doesn’t that sound like an absolutely soulful combination?

What You’ll Need

  • 2 tablespoons dried yarrow flowers
  • 6 cups of water
  • 2 large lemons, juiced
  • 1 cup raw honey
  • 6 slices of fresh fruit for garnish (optional)
ALLERGENS: Lemons, raw honey, fresh fruit

Method

Step One

Start by bringing 6 cups of water to a boil in a large pot.

Step Two

Once the water is boiling, add 2 tablespoons of dried yarrow flowers to the pot. Lower the heat and let it simmer for about ten minutes to allow the yarrow flowers to steep properly.

Step Three

While the yarrow flowers are simmering, juice the 2 large lemons and set the juice aside.

Step Four

After the tea has simmered for ten minutes, turn off the heat and strain the tea to remove the yarrow flowers. Add the freshly squeezed lemon juice and 1 cup of raw honey to the tea and stir until the honey is fully dissolved.

Step Five

Allow the tea to cool for a few minutes before serving. If desired, garnish each cup of tea with a slice of fresh fruit. Enjoy!
