Inspiration Behind the Recipe

My love for West African dishes and the inspiration drawn from Southern cooking blend harmoniously in this recipe. My Nigerian roots are sated by the enticing layers of flavor, whilst my Atlanta upbringing stakes a claim in the comforting, familiar ingredients used. I must credit Bobby Flay whose Southern-inspired recipes often inspire me to explore beyond my culinary boundaries, adding my personal touch to a well-loved American classic.

A Fusion of Flavors

This Honey Mustard Glazed Ham with Baked Beans recipe stands out due to its unique fusion of flavors. The glazed ham delivers a succulent, juicy interior under a wonderfully crisp, honey-mustard crust. Complementing the ham, the baked beans, are a savory-sweet side dish, enhanced by a medley of spices. The baked beans offer the complexity of molasses, crowned with the perfect kick from apple cider vinegar and Worcestershire sauce.

This standout recipe would be a great centerpiece for any family gathering, or holiday occasion. The warm spices invoke the holiday spirit, especially during Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year’s Eve. If you have a house full of ham lovers, this recipe is one to remember.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 bone-in fully cooked ham (about 10 pounds)
  • 1/3 cup of whole grain mustard
  • 1/4 cup of honey
  • 1/4 cup of light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 2 cans of baked beans (16 ounces each)
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup of ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons of molasses
  • 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
ALLERGENS: Mustard

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the fully cooked, bone-in ham in a roasting pan.

Step Two

In a bowl, mix together the whole grain mustard, honey, light brown sugar, ground cinnamon and nutmeg. This will create your glaze for the ham.

Step Three

Brush the entire ham with the honey mustard glaze, ensuring it is well covered. Place the ham in the preheated oven and bake for about 2 hours, basting it with the glaze every 30 minutes.

Step Four

While the ham is baking, you can prepare the baked beans. In a large saucepan, combine the baked beans, sliced onion, minced garlic, ketchup, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, and apple cider vinegar.

Step Five

Stir the ingredients together over medium heat. Allow the mixture to come to a simmer before reducing the heat to low. Slowly cook the beans, stirring occasionally, until they become thick and flavorful. This should take about 90 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step Six

Once the ham has finished baking and the beans are ready, remove both from the heat. Allow the ham to rest a few minutes before slicing and serving. Serve the baked beans alongside the glazed ham. Enjoy your Honey Mustard Glazed Ham with Baked Beans!
