As I bring together my Creole roots and French flair in the kitchen, I cannot help but be drawn to the unique and vibrant flavor profiles of my favourite dishes. Today, I’m introducing you to a recipe that holds a special place in my heart; a recipe that harmoniously marries the fruitiness of apples and pears with a rich crescendo of horseradish creaminess. Welcome, my dear readers, to the culinary world of Creamy Horseradish Soup.
A Soup With A Kick
Imagine capturing the adventurous spirit of Louisiana and the elegance of French cuisine in a bowl of soup. Intriguing, right? Well, that’s exactly what our Creamy Horseradish Soup does. The distinct savoriness of the soup is elevated by the redemption offered by horseradish’s spicy kick. If you’re a fan of the delightful Francois’ Shrimp Bisque, you will absolutely relish this dish.
A Mélange Of Health Benefits
Beyond its fantastic flavour, this soup is packed with health benefits. Apples and pears, the two key ingredients, contribute to this wealth of goodness. Apples are high in dietary fiber and vitamin C, which help in boosting cardiac health and immunity. Pears, with their high potassium content, help in controlling blood pressure.
The star of the soup, horseradish, possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have found that this root vegetable may help inhibit the growth of certain types of cancer cells. With each spoonful of this creamy delight, you’re not just indulging your taste buds, but your health as well.
Perfect Pairings
No dish exists in isolation and our Creamy Horseradish Soup is no different. For a heartier meal, pair this soup with a simple mixed green salad tied together with a citrus vinaigrette. It also works wonders alongside a crusty baguette, allowing you to dip and soak up all the creamy goodness. Alternatively, a roasted pork loin creates a delectable sweet and savory combo that’s hard to resist.
Whether it’s for a simple family dinner or a fancy soirée, the versatile Creamy Horseradish Soup has something to offer for every occasion. There’s an undeniable magic to it that transports you right into the heartlands of Louisiana, with a hint of a Parisian escapade. Is culinary travel in a bowl not a reason to love this recipe?
What You’ll Need
- 3 cups of vegetable broth
- 1 cup of heavy cream
- 1/2 cup prepared horseradish
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 large white onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 apple, peeled and diced
- 1 pear, peeled and diced
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup fresh chopped chives (for garnish)
Method
Step One
Start by melting the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Once melted, add the diced onion and minced garlic to the pot. Cook these ingredients, stirring occasionally until the onions become a golden brown color. This may take about 5 minutes.
Step Two
After the onions and garlic are well cooked, add the diced apple and pear to the pot. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally until the fruits have softened. This process should take around 5 minutes as well.
Step Three
Once the fruits have softened, add the prepared horseradish and vegetable broth into the pot. Bring this combination to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for about 20 minutes. This allows all the flavors to blend together.
Step Four
After the soup has been simmering for 20 minutes, use a blender or immersion blender to puree the soup until it is smooth. If using a regular blender, you might need to do this in batches.
Step Five
Return the pureed soup back to the pot and put it over low heat. Stir in the heavy cream, lemon juice, and season with salt and pepper. Let it simmer for another 5 minutes to heat through.
Step Six
Finally, ladle the creamy horseradish soup into bowls and top with the fresh chopped chives. Now, your Creamy Horseradish Soup is ready to serve. Enjoy this unique and flavorful dish!
