I’m incredibly excited to share with you one of my favorite vegetable dishes: Pak Choy with Ginger and Soy Sauce. This is a recipe that combines the robust flavors of the Caribbean with the heartiness of classic Spanish cuisine, resulting in a dish that dances on the palate. It’s a unique confluence of my Cuban and Spanish roots, and my life in the bustling culinary melting pot that is Miami.
Merging Cultures Through Cuisine
One of the things I adore about the Pak Choy with Ginger and Soy Sauce recipe is how it echoes my own heritage. You get a palette of flavors that’s just as vibrant as the dance forms I teach. The ginger-infused soy sauce brings to mind the intense spices of the Caribbean, while the firm yet tender Pak Choy subtly mirrors the comforting warmth of traditional Spanish dishes. There’s something about this flavor dance that keeps you coming back for more.
A Harmony of Health Benefits
Aside from its captivating flavors, what’s not to love when it comes to its health benefits? Pak Choy, also known as Bok Choy, is a powerhouse of nutrients. It’s packed with vitamins A, C, and K, and is a good source of iron and calcium. Not to mention, ginger, with its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, also takes center stage in this dish. Even the soy sauce and honey lend their health benefits to the mix, providing a not-too-indulgent way to fulfill cravings while adhering to a balanced diet. Complementary Combinations
On its own, Pak Choy with Ginger and Soy Sauce is a mouth-watering dish, but what if I tell you it can even be better? This recipe plays well with others, and a prime example would be a side of roasted chicken or grilled fish. Pairing it with a tropical cocktail, reminiscent of my Miami roots, and an assortment of tapas can transform an ordinary dinner into a quasi Spanish-Caribbean fiesta. If you’re a fan of tapas, you can find inspiration from the amazing variety of recipes featured on BBC Good Food.

What You’ll Need
- 3 bunches of Pak Choy
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 4 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
- 3 tablespoons of fresh ginger, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup of soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 1 cup of water
- 1 tablespoon of cornstarch, mixed with 2 tablespoons of water
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
Method
Step One
Wash the Pak Choy thoroughly, trim off the base, and cut them into bite-sized pieces.
Step Two
In a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped garlic and ginger to the pan and stir-fry them together for a minute until they become aromatic.
Step Three
Add the cut Pak Choy to the pan. Stir-fry it together with the garlic and ginger for 2-3 minutes until it begins to wilt.
Step Four
In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, honey, and 1 cup of water. Stir this mixture well until the honey is completely dissolved.
Step Five
Pour the soy sauce mixture over the Pak Choy in the pan. Allow it to cook, tossing regularly to ensure it’s evenly coated, for about 5 minutes.
Step Six
In a separate bowl, mix the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to create a slurry. Add this to the pan and stir well. Cook for another few minutes until the sauce has thickened.
Step Seven
Serve the Pak Choy warm, garnished with sesame seeds.
