Though the ingredients in both recipes differ, the concept of innovatively using staple ingredients remains central to the dish.

One of my favorite aspects of these Black Bean and Sweet Potato Burgers is the element of surprise and delight when paired with traditional Japanese dishes. What You’ll Need

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes
  • 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 cup quick-cooking oats
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 6 hamburger buns, split
  • Lettuce leaves and tomato slices for serving (optional)

Method

Step One

Begin by preheating the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Poke the sweet potatoes with a fork several times to allow steam to escape and bake them for about 50 minutes, or until tender.

Step Two

While the sweet potatoes are baking, take a large bowl and add the black beans. Mash them until they are slightly smooth but with some whole beans still remaining for texture.

Step Three

In a skillet, heat some olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until they are tender and fragrant.

Step Four

Once the sweet potatoes are done, let them cool for a bit and then remove the skins. Add the sweet potatoes to the bowl containing the mashed black beans.

Step Five

Add the sautéed onion and garlic into the bowl, along with the chopped cilantro, chili powder, ground cumin, and smoked paprika. Mix everything well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.

Step Six

Now add the quick-cooking oats and all-purpose flour to the mixture. Mix it once again until everything combines to form a sort of dough.

Step Seven

Shape the mixture into six patties and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for about 30 minutes or until the burgers look golden and crispy.

Step Eight
