Grilled Fish with Sorrel Sauce

If there’s one thing I love more than teaching children, it’s cooking up a storm in the kitchen. One of my all-time favorite dishes to prepare is Grilled Fish with Sorrel Sauce. There’s something remarkably refreshing about the combination of rich, flaky fish perfectly grilled and topped with a zesty, slightly tangy sorrel sauce.

A Taste of Tradition with a Twist

Growing up in Texas, my culinary roots are deeply embedded in Tex-Mex traditions. However, my palate has always been adventurous, yearning to explore different flavors and techniques. This recipe is a delightful departure from the usual spicy fare, yet it retains a special place in my heart because of its simplicity and elegance. Plus, it reminds me of those tranquil summer evenings in Texas when we’d grill in the backyard, savoring the last rays of the sun.

Nutritional Benefits

Aside from its incredible flavor, this dish is also a dollop of health on your plate. Fish is an excellent source of lean protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for maintaining heart health. The sorrel sauce, made from fresh sorrel leaves, is packed with vitamins A and C, iron, and calcium. The addition of garlic and shallots not only enhances the taste but also offers antibacterial and antiviral properties. This delightful combination ensures that you’re not just treating your taste buds but also nourishing your body.

The Grilled Fish with Sorrel Sauce goes exceptionally well with a variety of side dishes. Pair it with a light quinoa salad or roasted vegetables for a complete, balanced meal. If you’re looking for something similar, you might also enjoy dishes like baked salmon with dill sauce or tilapia with a lemon-caper butter. Each one brings its own unique twist to the table but retains a wonderful harmony of flavors.

Cooking this dish doesn’t require advanced culinary skills, making it perfect for both seasoned chefs and beginners. The process is simple: grill the fish fillets to perfection, and whip up the sorrel sauce while the fish cooks. A touch of Dijon mustard adds a bit of zing to the sauce, while white wine and heavy cream lend it a velvety finish. Trust me, your guests will marvel at the exquisite taste!

Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or simply want to treat yourself after a long day, this recipe offers a gourmet experience that’s both enjoyable to make and delightful to eat. What You’ll Need

  • 6 fish fillets (about 2-3 pounds total)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1/2 cup fresh sorrel leaves
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup white wine
  • 1 shallot, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
ALLERGENS: Fish, Dairy

Method

Step One

Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.

Step Two

Brush the fish fillets with olive oil on both sides. Season with salt and black pepper.

Step Three

Place the fish fillets on the preheated grill. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until the fish is opaque and flakes easily with a fork. During the last minute of grilling, place the lemon slices on the grill and allow them to caramelize slightly.

Step Four

While the fish is grilling, prepare the sorrel sauce. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the finely chopped shallot and sauté until translucent, about 2-3 minutes.

Step Five

Add the minced garlic to the saucepan and cook for another minute. Then pour in the white wine and let it simmer for about 2 minutes, reducing slightly.

Step Six

Add the fresh sorrel leaves to the saucepan and cook until wilted, about 1-2 minutes. Stir in the heavy cream and Dijon mustard. Let the sauce simmer gently until it thickens, about 3-4 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

Step Seven

Remove the grilled fish fillets from the grill and arrange them on a serving platter. Pour the sorrel sauce over the fish, garnish with the grilled lemon slices, and serve immediately. Enjoy your Grilled Fish with Sorrel Sauce.
