The Flavorful Journey

Behind the simplicity of a Hamburger Bun, there’s a combination of carefully balanced ingredients that work together to create its unique essence. The distinctive taste of active dry yeast harmonizes with the sweet touch of white sugar, while the harmonious blend of vegetable oil and the richness of one large egg add depth to the flavor. Punchy salt and hearty bread flour give the bun its characteristic texture, and a gentle brushing of melted butter achieves that distinct, golden top crust. Topped with sesame seeds, the Hamburger Bun becomes as pleasing to the eye as it is to the palate.

Incomparable Versatility

Yet, the Hamburger Bun isn’t just for its namesake dish. It is also akin to a tender brioche in flavor, mirroring the soft texture that makes brioche a preferred choice for many gourmet sandwiches. The Hamburger Bun, in its delectable simplicity, is your perfect canvas for creativity. Try it as a substitute for traditional bread in your favorite club sandwich, soak up savory flavors in a comforting stuffing, or simply enjoy it toasted with a slather of butter for a quick, delicious snack. Its adaptability is what makes this bun an integral part of the culinary world.

The Baking Adventure

When embarking on the journey of baking this delicious bread, it’s important to remember that patience is key. Allow the yeast to fully activate in the warm water, master the art of kneading the dough until it’s smooth and pliable, and always give the bread time to rise. This homemade Hamburger Bun may take some effort, but the taste and satisfaction of creating a bakery-worthy bun will be worth every minute.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 cup of warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • 2 tablespoons of active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons of white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 3 cups of bread flour
  • 1 tablespoon of melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon of sesame seeds (optional)
ALLERGENS: yeast, egg, wheat, sesame

Method

Step One

Begin by dissolving the 2 tablespoons of active dry yeast and 2 tablespoons of white sugar in 1 cup of warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C). Let this mixture stand until it becomes frothy, approximately 10 minutes.

Step Two

In another bowl, whisk together 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, 1 large egg, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Add this to the yeast mixture.

Step Three

Gradually mix in 3 cups of bread flour until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. If the dough is too wet, add more flour. If it’s too dry, add more water.

Step Four

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead until it is smooth and elastic, about 8 to 10 minutes.

Step Five

Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a clean towel. Let it rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size, which will take about one hour.

Step Six

Punch down the dough to remove any air bubbles. Divide it into 8 equal pieces and form each piece into a round bun.

Step Seven

Place the buns on a lightly greased baking sheet and cover them with a towel. Allow them to rise again until they have doubled in size, about half an hour.

Step Eight

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Brush the tops of the buns with melted butter and sprinkle them with sesame seeds if desired.

Step Nine

Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown. Allow to cool before slicing and serving.
