Why I Love German Beef Steak with Rosemary Potatoes and Green Beans

One of my absolute favorite dishes to prepare, full of rustic charm and mouth-watering flavors, is the German classic – Beef Steak with Rosemary Potatoes and Green Beans. I find this recipe captivating and incredibly satisfying, not just for its delicious taste, but also for the heartwarming feeling of home it brings with every mouthful.

Global Flavors, Local Love

While my heart and kitchen dance between the lively Caribbean flavors and rich Spanish classics of my culinary heritage, I have always been drawn to the comforting, hearty cuisine of Germany. This Beef Steak with Rosemary Potatoes and Green Beans recipe, in particular, holds a special place in my heart. It’s simple yet bursting with flavor, and I find it deeply inspired by the cooking techniques and style of Simon Rogan – a celebrated chef known for his love of fresh, seasonal ingredients.

The Warmth of Simple Comfort Food

What I adore about this recipe is the simple, rustic appeal of it. The quality of your ingredients – particularly the beef steak and fresh vegetables – can shine without being overshadowed by overly complex flavors. The fragrant rosemary that’s toss together with baby potatoes, the enticing aroma of garlic spicing the air, and the tangy touch of lemon bring the joy of home-cooking to life. There’s a deeply comforting sense of familiarity with each bite, which reminds me of the home-cooked meals from my childhood, despite the different cultural background.

This Beef Steak with Rosemary Potatoes and Green Beans recipe echoes many characteristics of great comfort food similar to my Cuban Roast Pork (Lechon). They are both hearty, filling dishes that combine savory meats with delightful accompaniments, making them excellent choices for family meals, gatherings or casual dinner parties.

What You’ll Need

  • 3 pounds of Beef Steak
  • 2 tablespoons of Olive Oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 2 pounds of Baby Potatoes
  • 4 sprigs of fresh Rosemary
  • 3 tablespoons of Butter, melted
  • 2 pounds of fresh Green Beans, trimmed
  • 2 tablespoons of Garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of Lemon Zest
  • 2 tablespoons of Lemon Juice
  • 1 cup of Beef Broth
  • 2 tablespoons of Mustard
ALLERGENS: Beef, Olive Oil, Butter, Garlic, Mustard

Method

Step One

Start by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). Meanwhile, rub the beef steaks with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, salt, and pepper. Make sure all of the steaks are evenly coated.

Step Two

Heat up a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steaks to the pan and sear each side for 3 minutes or until they have a nice brown crust. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set them aside.

Step Three

Add the baby potatoes and 2 sprigs of rosemary into the same skillet and cook for 3-5 minutes or until they start to brown. Drizzle the melted butter over the potatoes. Sprinkle some salt and pepper to taste.

Step Four

Place the skillet in the oven and roast the potatoes for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, add the green beans and the rest of the rosemary sprigs to the skillet. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of olive oil and continue to roast for another 15 minutes.

Step Five

In a small saucepan over medium heat, sauté the minced garlic until it becomes fragrant. Next, add in the lemon zest, lemon juice, beef broth, and mustard. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for 10 minutes or until reduced by half.

Step Six

After your potatoes and green beans have finished roasting, remove them from the oven and place the seared steaks on top. Pour the garlic-lemon sauce over the steaks and put them back in the oven for 10-15 minutes or until the steaks reach your desired level of doneness.

Step Seven

Once done, remove the skillet from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Your Beef Steak with Rosemary Potatoes and Green Beans is now ready to be enjoyed!
