From my kitchen to yours, allow me to introduce you to one of my favorite creations: BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches. Masterfully blending the familiarity of traditional sandwich-making with the adventurous approach to vegan cuisine, this dish remains close to my heart for several reasons.
A Perfect Bridge Between Cultures
While I’m known for my Italian-American dishes, I relish the opportunity to tread unknown culinary waters. Growing up in New Jersey, my grandparents introduced me to the vibrant essence of Italian cooking but there is something enthralling about discovering and mastering new delicacies from different cuisines. There’s no greater joy than putting an unexpected spin on an ordinary dish, introducing a taste of the adventurous—like with these exceptional BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches.
A Healthier Choice Without Compromise
The star of this sandwich, the jackfruit, is not only versatile but also brings numerous health benefits. It packs a punch of dietary fibre, keeps the immunity strong with a good amount of Vitamin C, and is advantageous for your heart health. Plus, it’s a great source of iron, magnesium, and Vitamin B6. And let’s not forget about the olive oil, a heart-healthy addition. Who says healthy can’t be delicious?
Apart from its nutritional accolades, BBQ Jackfruit bears an uncanny resemblance in texture and flavor to pulled pork, making it a popular choice for those looking to transition to plant-based eating. With mouthwatering barbecue sauce and garnishing of coleslaw, lettuce, and pickles, it’s no wonder why this sandwich has won so many hearts—not to mention the delight of biting into an incredibly soft and fresh burger bun.
A Multi-Course Feast
BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches aren’t just confined to lunch or dinner, either. With their unique flavour and texture, these sandwiches make an excellent centerpiece for a fun weekend brunch. Pair them with garlic-roasted potatoes or a refreshing green bean and chickpea salad for a balanced feast.
Whether it’s a casual gathering with friends or a simple family meal, dishes like BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches provide a delicious point of conversation, not just because of their unexpected ingredients, but because of the care and creativity it takes to prepare them. It’s all about bringing joy, nutrition, and a bit of culinary adventure to the dinner table.
What You’ll Need
- 3 20-ounce cans young green jackfruit in water
- 1 large onion, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1.5 cups barbecue sauce
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 6 burger buns
- 2 cups shredded lettuce
- 1.5 cups coleslaw
- 6 pickles for garnishing
Method
Step One
Start by draining and rinsing the jackfruit from the cans. Next, cut the jackfruit into smaller pieces for easier cooking. Set aside.
Step Two
In a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the pan and saute until the onion has become translucent and the garlic is fragrant.
Step Three
Add the jackfruit to the pan with the onions and garlic. Stir well to ensure all the jackfruit pieces are coated with the oil and onion mixture.
Step Four
Add the barbecue sauce, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper to the pan. Stir well to evenly distribute the spices and sauce throughout the jackfruit mixture.
Step Five
Cover the pan and reduce the heat to low. Allow the jackfruit to simmer for approximately 20-30 minutes, or until fully heated and infused with the flavors of the sauce and spices.
Step Six
While the jackfruit is simmering, prepare your burger buns. Lay out the buns and spread a generous amount of coleslaw on the bottom half of the bun. Top with shredded lettuce.
Step Seven
Once the jackfruit is ready, use a fork to shred it in the pan. Stir well to ensure the shredded jackfruit is fully coated in the sauce.
Step Eight
Load up each bun with a generous serving of the barbecued jackfruit. If you like, add a pickle to each sandwich for an extra tangy crunch. Serve immediately and enjoy your BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches.
