A Culinary Testament to My Heritage

This Beef Stir Fry with Water-Pepper and Ginger recipe is naturally imbued with the comfort inherent to my Irish grandparents’ kitchen, while also embracing the versatility and accessibility of Stir Fry dishes which I’ve grown to love. The use of beef harkens back to classic Irish dishes like corned beef and cabbage, a staple from my childhood, while water chestnuts, a common Asian stir fry ingredient, showcase the diverse range of ingredients found in the typical Boston food scene.

Health on a Plate

Most importantly, this is a dish that doesn’t compromise health for flavor. It’s nutrient-rich, packed with a variety of vegetables from bell peppers to baby corn that offer a rich assortment of vitamins, dietary fibers and antioxidants. The ginger, too, contributes to the overall health benefit of this dish. According to Medical News Today, ginger is known to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and has been used for its medicinal properties for thousands of years.

Beef, of course, is an excellent source of protein, B-vitamins, and iron. If you wish to control your cholesterol intake, opt for lean beef sirloin. But don’t forget that a little bit of beef fat can lend a pleasant depth to this dish.

Complementary dishes? Well, if you are going all out with an Asian theme, you could pair this stir fry with a classic Oven Fried Rice or perhaps a light and refreshing Vietnamese Spring Roll for the perfect East-meets-West fusion meal.

Flavorful yet healthy, this Beef Stir Fry with Water-Pepper and Ginger is a dish that captures the essence of my cooking – a marriage of tradition, creativity, and well-being. I hope you love it as much as I do.

What You’ll Need

  • 1.5 lbs of Beef Sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons of Vegetable Oil
  • 1 teaspoon of Crushed Garlic
  • 1 tablespoon of Freshly Grated Ginger
  • 2 Red Bell Peppers, sliced
  • 2 Green Bell Peppers, sliced
  • 1 Yellow Bell Pepper, sliced
  • 1.5 cups of Water Chestnuts, sliced
  • 1.5 cups of Baby Corn
  • 1 large Yellow Onion, sliced
  • 1/4 cup of Soy Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of Cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup of Beef Broth
  • 1 tablespoon of Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Crushed Red Pepper
ALLERGENS: Soy

Method

Step One

Thinly slice the beef sirloin. Prepare all vegetables: slice all the bell peppers along with the yellow onion, grate the ginger, and slice the water chestnuts.

Step Two

In a large frying pan or a wok, heat up 2 tablespoons of the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the sliced beef to the pan and sauté until it is well browned. Once the beef is cooked, move it to a dish and set it aside for now.

Step Three

Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil to the pan. Add the crushed garlic and grated ginger to the oil and sauté them briefly until they become fragrant. This should take about 30 seconds.

Step Four

Add the bell peppers, yellow onion, water chestnuts and baby corn to the pan. Sauté the vegetables until they are just tender, which should take 5 to 7 minutes.

Step Five

While the vegetables are cooking, whisk together the soy sauce, beef broth, cornstarch, brown sugar and crushed red pepper in a small bowl. This mixture will be used to create a flavorful sauce for the stir fry.

Step Six

Once vegetables are ready, return the cooked beef to the pan and pour the soy sauce mixture over everything. Stir well to ensure that all ingredients are coated with the sauce.

Step Seven

Cook the stir fry for another 2 to 3 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened. Make sure to stir the ingredients frequently so that everything is evenly cooked and the sauce does not burn.

Step Eight

Remove the pan from the heat and let the stir fry rest for a few minutes before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld together. Serve hot, and enjoy your Beef Stir Fry with Water-Pepper and Ginger!
