About Biscuit
If there is one thing that is universally loved and appreciated at nearly every breakfast table, it’s the biscuit. Fluffy, buttery, and simply delicious, this humble bread is often the unsung hero of the morning meal. Far from being a mere meal accompaniment, the biscuit holds its own and offers numerous delightful possibilities for the adventurous gourmand.
A Closer Look at the Biscuit
Beneath its golden-brown surface and soft, flaky interior, our take on the biscuit carries an elegant simplicity. By using a mixture of all-purpose flour, baking powder, a touch of salt, chilled unsalted butter, and milk, this bread attains a perfect balance. Each ingredient contributes towards creating a harmony of textures and flavors that makes the biscuit a crowd-pleaser.
The biscuit’s beauty lies in its versatility—it can comfortably fit within a casual brunch or a formal dinner setting, and everything in between. Top it with melting butter, favorite marmalade, or honey for a sweet treat. Alternatively, stuff it with country ham, sausage, or a fried egg for a hearty breakfast sandwich.
Discovering Combo Possibilities
When paired with the right dishes, our biscuit can truly shine. It is ideal for sopping up the flavorful juices of a Southern-style chicken and dumplings or adding substance to a smoky navy beans and ham hock soup. This wonderful little bread works exceptionally well in soaking up creamy, luscious sauces of a homestyle roast, too.
With its delightful texture and subtly sweet taste, the biscuit also pairs beautifully with cheese—think sharp cheddar or a soft, earthy brie. And for a truly lavish treat, spread some French Beurre de Baratte Doux on a freshly baked biscuit and enjoy the heavenly combination.
So, whether you’re a biscuit purist, a food adventurer, or someone who enjoys good ol’ comfort food, the possibilities with this delicious, versatile bread are indeed endless!
What You’ll Need
- 2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon of baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, cold
- 3/4 cup of milk
Method
Step One
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Meanwhile, in a large mixing bowl, combine the 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
Step Two
Take the 1/2 cup of cold unsalted butter and cut it into small cubes. Add these cubes to your flour mixture. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture starts to look like coarse crumbs.
Step Three
Gradually pour the 3/4 cup of milk into the flour and butter mixture. Stir slowly until just combined – do not over-mix. The dough should be a bit sticky but still manageable.
Step Four
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead it a few times until it holds together, then pat it out to about a 1-inch thickness.
Step Five
Using a round biscuit cutter or a drinking glass with a sharp edge, cut biscuits out of the dough and place them onto a baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space between each one.
Step Six
Bake the biscuits in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes, or until they’re golden brown on top. Let them cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving.
