Why I Love American Black Bean and Sweet Potato Burgers
One of the American recipes I’ve enjoyed putting my unique twist on is the Black Bean and Sweet Potato Burger. Often when one thinks of burgers, the traditional beef patty comes to mind. But this delicious American classic can transform in unique and tasty ways when we open our minds to the possibilities of unconventional ingredients. With my constant travels to Japan and the countless Japanese recipes ingrained in my blood, I’ve been inspired to look at every dish from an innovative perspective.
The Inspiration
I especially draw inspiration from acclaimed chefs like Jamie Oliver, who continually break barriers when it comes to creating sensational dishes from plant-based ingredients. There may not be a single inspiring chef for every recipe, but the culminating effect of their collective creativity is nothing short of inspirational.
The Beauty of Fusion
Black Bean and Sweet Potato Burgers can remind one of an extraordinary category of Latin American cuisine, known as “Papas Rellenas“, a delectable dish where potatoes are stuffed with a vibrant, diverse set of ingredients. Though the ingredients in both recipes differ, the concept of innovatively using staple ingredients remains central to the dish.
One of my favorite aspects of these Black Bean and Sweet Potato Burgers is the element of surprise and delight when paired with traditional Japanese dishes. Try enjoying it alongside a refreshing bowl of Miso Soup or a crisp, light Sunomono (Japanese Cucumber Salad). The hearty, robust flavors of the burger perfectly contrast the light, palate-cleansing nature of these traditional Japanese dishes.
It’s an honor to share this adventurous idea with you. I’m sure the Black Bean and Sweet Potato Burgers will light up your next meal, adding a touch of delightful fusion to your dining experience.
What You’ll Need
- 2 medium sweet potatoes
- 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro
- 2 teaspoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 cup quick-cooking oats
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 6 hamburger buns, split
- Lettuce leaves and tomato slices for serving (optional)
Method
Step One
Begin by preheating the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Poke the sweet potatoes with a fork several times to allow steam to escape and bake them for about 50 minutes, or until tender.
Step Two
While the sweet potatoes are baking, take a large bowl and add the black beans. Mash them until they are slightly smooth but with some whole beans still remaining for texture.
Step Three
In a skillet, heat some olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until they are tender and fragrant.
Step Four
Once the sweet potatoes are done, let them cool for a bit and then remove the skins. Add the sweet potatoes to the bowl containing the mashed black beans.
Step Five
Add the sautéed onion and garlic into the bowl, along with the chopped cilantro, chili powder, ground cumin, and smoked paprika. Mix everything well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
Step Six
Now add the quick-cooking oats and all-purpose flour to the mixture. Mix it once again until everything combines to form a sort of dough.
Step Seven
Shape the mixture into six patties and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for about 30 minutes or until the burgers look golden and crispy.
Step Eight
Serve the burgers on split hamburger buns with lettuce leaves, tomato slices, and any other toppings you prefer. Enjoy your homemade Black Bean and Sweet Potato Burgers!
