For this New Yorker, there’s no better way to celebrate my passion for NYC’s culinary diversity and blend of cultures than with a recipe that merges varied flavors in harmony, just like our beloved city! The dish I’m talking about is none other than the Black Mustard and Honey Roasted Chicken. A symphony of sweet honey, sharp black mustard, and succulent chicken, this dish encapsulates the essence of a hearty meal packed with wholesome ingredients.
Where Savory Meets Sweet
There’s something about the blend of honey and mustard that just works. It’s an age-old pairing, almost reminiscent of the classic Honey Mustard Chicken Thighs. But with our Black Mustard and Honey Roasted Chicken recipe, we are stepping it up a notch. Wildflower honey brings sweetness and depth, while black mustard seeds lend a pungent, slightly spicy kick. Infused together, they create a mouth-watering glaze that caramelizes on the chicken during baking, resulting in an irresistible layer of flavor.
Fleet of Fresh Flavors
But it’s not just about the honey and mustard – layers of fresh lemon, thyme, minced garlic, and ginger elevate this dish into a refreshing medley of flavors, almost akin to a summer garden. The savory chicken broth and slight tang of onion tie everything together, making every bite of this dish utterly divine.
Just as a stage production derives its magic from the blend of various elements, as an actor, I’ve seen how this recipe is also a symphony of well-coordinated flavors. Each ingredient, like a cast member, plays its part without overpowering the others, creating a harmonious final result.
The Health Twist
Perhaps what I love most about this Black Mustard and Honey Roasted Chicken recipe – besides its captivating taste – is how it manages to weave health benefits into each serving. Mustard seeds are known for their rich nutrient content, high in fiber and full of antioxidants. The honey, besides acting as a healthier alternative to refined sugar, contains phenolic acids and flavonoids that pack a powerful antioxidant punch.
Moreover, the use of olive oil, garlic, and onion add on to the heart-healthy profile. As a person always striving for balance – in life and on the plate – I love experimenting with such wholesome ingredients and transforming them into dishes that are both flavorful and good for the body.
All things considered, whether it’s a family dinner or a gathering with friends, this Black Mustard and Honey Roasted Chicken would be a perfect dish. Thinly slice some fresh seasonal fruits for a salad or prepare roasted veggies and you’ve got a balanced meal that is equally nourishing and delicious.
What You’ll Need
- 6 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
- 1 cup of wildflower honey
- 3 tablespoons of black mustard seeds
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 large lemon
- 6 sprigs of fresh thyme
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 3 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon of minced fresh ginger
- 1 cup of chicken broth
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
Method
Step One
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Season the chicken thighs with salt and pepper to taste.
Step Two
In a large ovenproof skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add the chicken thighs, skin side down, and sear until the skin is crispy and golden brown, about 8-10 minutes. Turn the chicken over and cook for another 5 minutes.
Step Three
While the chicken is cooking, grate the rind from the lemon and then squeeze the juice. Combine the lemon rind and juice with the honey, black mustard seeds, minced garlic, minced ginger and a pinch of salt and pepper.
Step Four
Remove the cooked chicken to a plate for a moment. In the same skillet, add the sliced onion, cook until translucent and then add the chicken broth, scraping any bits off the bottom of the skillet.
Step Five
Place the chicken thighs back in the skillet, skin side up. Pour the honey and mustard mixture over the chicken. Intersperse the fresh thyme sprigs among the chicken pieces.
Step Six
Place the skillet in the preheated oven and roast for 25-30 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the sauce has thickened slightly.
Step Seven
Remove the skillet from the oven and let the chicken rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your Black Mustard and honey roasted chicken!
