A Taste of History

Every ingredient in this Braised Beef with Egyptian Onions brings a depth of flavor that’s unique yet harmonious, much like the melting pot of cultures that Boston is home to. The beef, sourced from the local markets, dovetails with the Egyptian onions, which bring an exotic twist, transforming an otherwise common dish into a unique culinary journey.Egyptian onions, also known as walking onions, take centre stage in this dish, their earthy taste mingling seamlessly with the beef and wine to create a hearty meal that’s comforting and nourishing.

Health in a Pot

Beyond just the richness in flavor, what I love about this dish is the inherent nutrient value it carries. Beef, being an excellent source of protein, is balanced with the beneficial fiber from onions, carrots and prunes. Adding the warm embrace of garlic, paprika, and parsley to the mix, this recipe is laden with natural antioxidants and vitamins that are great for overall health. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “We are what we eat”, and this is one recipe that makes you feel good inside and out.

Perfect Pairing

While the stew is sumptuous enough to stand on its own, it marries well with a host of side dishes. Garlic roasted potatoes make for a hearty accompaniment, while a simple salad can lend freshness to balance the rich flavors. Irish soda bread—a nod to my family’s Irish roots—mops up the wine-infused beef broth beautifully, making each morsel a celebration in itself.

Describing why I love the Braised Beef with Egyptian Onions recipe feels like an intimate journey into my own life, culinary beliefs, and heritage. It’s not just food; it’s tradition, love, and comfort served in a bowl. It’s the anticipation as it simmers, the shared laughter around the table, and the satisfactory sighs that follow. Whether you’re cooking for your significant other on a cozy evening or for your little ones on a Sunday afternoon just like I do for my Laura and baby boy, this meal will fill your home with warmth and your heart with joy.

What You’ll Need

 • 2 lbs beef stew meat
 • 2 cups Egyptian onions, finely chopped
 • 2 tablespoons olive oil
 • 4 cloves garlic, minced
 • 1 cup red wine
 • 2 cups beef broth
 • 1 teaspoon salt
 • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
 • 1 teaspoon paprika
 • 2 bay leaves
 • 4 large carrots, chopped
 • 1 cup dried prunes
 • Parsley for garnish
ALLERGENS: Beef

Method

Step One

Start by heating the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add in your beef stew meat and sear it until browned on all sides. This should take about 5-10 minutes. Once browned, remove the meat from the pot and set it aside for now.

Step Two

In the same pot, add your finely chopped Egyptian onions and minced garlic. Sauté them in the pan until they become translucent and fragrant, approximately 5 minutes.

Step Three

Return the browned beef to the pot. Pour in the red wine, scraping the bottom of the pot with a spatula to deglaze it. Let the wine simmer for around 5 minutes, or until it reduces in volume by half.

Step Four

Now, add the beef broth to the pot. Season the mixture with salt, black pepper, paprika, and add the bay leaves. Lower the heat, cover the pot and let it simmer for about 1.5 hours. This slow cooking process will help the meat become tender and absorb the flavours.

Step Five

Next, add the chopped carrots and dried prunes to the pot. Stir well and let the mixture simmer for another 30 minutes, or until the carrots are tender.

Step Six

Once everything is cooked and the flavors have married well, remove the bay leaves. Then, turn off the heat.

Step Seven

Serve your Braised Beef with Egyptian Onions in bowls, garnishing with some fresh parsley on top. This warm and hearty dish is perfect served with fresh bread or over rice. Enjoy!
