As a Montana boy who often roamed the great outdoors, I can’t help but have a soft spot for native vegetation and indigenous flavors. One dish that always takes me back to those adventures is the extraordinary Broadleaf Arrowheads Stir Fry.

Broadleaf Arrowheads Stir Fry

Broadleaf Arrowheads: An Underappreciated Gift from Mother Nature

For those not accustomed to regional fare, Broadleaf Arrowheads might sound foreign. This perennial aquatic plant, also known as duck potato, is a staple of the Native American diet and has been consumed for centuries. These small tubers can be harvested in late fall and winter when they’re at their most delicious. They lend a earthy, slightly nutty flavor to this stir fry that is both intriguing and grounding.

Creating a Symphony of Flavors

What I truly love about the Broadleaf Arrowheads Stir Fry is how it marries so many vibrant flavors together. The sweetness of the pineapple, the crunch of fresh bell peppers and carrots, and the tang of soy sauce create an unforgettable palate experience. Anchored by the rustic charm of the arrowheads, this cross-cultural fusion is aromatic, nutritious and utterly satisfying.

However, it’s far more than just a collage of flavors. With this Broadleaf Arrowheads Stir Fry, you’ll be giving your body a generous dose of essential nutrients. The arrowheads themselves are rich in potassium and Vitamin C, the colorful veggies come packed with fiber and antioxidants, and the pineapple lends an exotic punch of vitamin C. A splash of soy sauce brings umami and the ginger doubles as a flavorful anti-inflammatory. Think of it as a delicious investment in your long-term health.

Dishes That Pair Wonderfully

If you’re keen on building a complete meal around this stir fry, I’d suggest pairing it with a lean protein. Grilled venison steak or Bison burgers are excellent choices that complement this veggie-centric dish brilliantly. The heft of the meat is a perfect counterbalance to this light, bright and crunchy stir fry.

To tap into the health benefits even more, consider enjoying it with a robust green salad, preferably one with dark leafy greens like kale or spinach. And if you want to keep it fully vegetarian, a hearty lentil soup or a black bean burger would be a delightful match too.

Whether served as a side or a main course, the Broadleaf Arrowheads Stir Fry is a colorful taste excursion that invites us to explore the wild ingredients of Montana. I promise it will leave you yearning for another plateful, and perhaps, inspire you to embark on your own culinary adventures.

Enjoy and happy cooking!

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups Broadleaf Arrowheads
  • 3 Tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup bell peppers, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup carrots, julienned
  • 1 cup onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 cup fresh pineapple chunks
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons cornstarch dissolved in 2 Tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • Optional: sesame seeds for garnish
ALLERGENS: soy

Method

Step One

First, wash the broadleaf arrowheads thoroughly. You need to ensure they are clean before you use them.

Step Two

Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the thinly sliced bell peppers, carrots, onions, minced garlic, and grated fresh ginger. Stir fry the ingredients for about 5 minutes until they are softened.

Step Three

Next, add the broadleaf arrowheads into the pan. Continue to stir fry for another 5 minutes until the arrowheads become tender.

Step Four

Now add the pineapple chunks and cherry tomatoes to the pan. Stir well to combine all the ingredients. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step Five

In a separate bowl, mix together the soy sauce, cornstarch dissolved in water, and honey. Pour this mixture into the pan with the vegetables and stir well to coat.

Step Six

Let the mixture simmer on medium heat for about 10 minutes until the sauce thickens. This allows the flavors to meld together.

Step Seven

Finally, taste the stir fry and adjust the seasoning if needed. Serve hot with a sprinkling of optional sesame seeds on top for garnish.
