I can’t wait to share a slice of Italy’s finest sunshine with you, enveloped in the vibrant and fresh flavors of Caprese Salad with Fresh Basil. I’ve always been one to appreciate the simplest dishes, especially when they declare the finest and freshest ingredients. I believe they often make the most delightful meals. Drawing from my French and Creole roots, I frequently find myself experimenting with recipes that are rich, elegant and satisfying, much like this Caprese Salad.

Caprese Salad with Fresh Basil

The Artistry of Simplicity

One of my favorite aspects of this Caprese salad is the minimalistic yet artistic presentation of ingredients. Coming from a lineage of French culinary influence, I have a predilection for aesthetics in food. With just tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and brightly colored basil leaves, all drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and a splash of balsamic vinegar, you have a dish that looks more like a painter’s palette than a simple salad. The vibrant colors and enticing aroma promise a delicious and refreshing experience.

Health Benefits and Versatility

The high-quality, fresh ingredients in Caprese Salad with Fresh Basil aren’t just for show. They have numerous health benefits too. The tomatoes provide a fantastic source of vitamins C and K, while the fresh mozzarella offers a good dose of protein. The olive oil and basil contribute to heart health and overall well-being.
Aside from being a delightfully vibrant starter or side dish, it can also work as a light main course, especially in the hotter months when a cool, refreshing bite is everything. You can pair this Caprese salad with a glass of Chianti, or for those summer BBQs, a citrus-based cocktail. It’s an ideal partner for any Italian pasta dish, like “Aglio et Olio”.

In my culinary adventures, I have also found that this Caprese salad works wonders layered in a crusty ciabatta for a picnic-ready sandwich, or chopped and used as a topping for grilled chicken or fish. Its compatibility with so many dishes is just another reason why this recipe is a cherished part of my gourmet collection.

I look forward to sharing more such wonders of the culinary world with you. After all, as Julia Child once said, “People who love to eat are always the best people.”

What You’ll Need

  • 3 large ripe tomatoes
  • 1 pound fresh mozzarella cheese
  • 1 bunch fresh basil leaves
  • 1 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
ALLERGENS: Mozzarella cheese

Method

Step One

Start by washing the tomatoes and basil leaves. Then, slice the tomatoes and the mozzarella cheese into 1/4 inch thick slices. The next step is to remove the basil leaves from the stems.

Step Two

Arrange the tomato and mozzarella slices on a platter, to make it look more appealing, you can alternate and overlay them. Tuck whole basil leaves in between the tomato and cheese slices.

Step Three

Drizzle the arranged platter with your extra virgin olive oil. Then, sprinkle with salt and freshly ground pepper to your taste preference.

Step Four

The final step is to drizzle the balsamic vinegar over the salad. Remember to do this right before serving to avoid the salad from getting soggy. Enjoy your Caprese Salad with Fresh Basil!
