There’s something unmistakably comforting about a warm bowl of Caramelized Onion and Yam Soup. As the leaves turn golden and the air begins to nip, this hearty, wholesome soup has an uncanny ability to wrap you in a cozy culinary embrace. Perhaps it’s the blend of golden, caramelized onions with the subtle sweetness of yams, or the silky finish from a touch of heavy cream that has made it one of my all-time favorite recipes.
Nutritious and Nourishing
One aspect that truly endears me to this soup is its nutritious profile. Yams are a fantastic source of dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They are incredibly rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin A, which supports immune function and vision health respectively. Onions are not just a flavor powerhouse; they are packed with antioxidants and compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties. Combining these two with the richness of olive oil and the creaminess of heavy cream results in a balanced meal that nourishes the body and soul.
A Versatile Delight
The beauty of Caramelized Onion and Yam Soup lies in its versatility. It pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes. Serve it as an appetizer to complement a main course like roasted chicken or grilled fish. Alternatively, it can star as the main dish when accompanied by a crusty loaf of sourdough bread or a simple side salad. If you’re a fan of classic New England fare, you may find that this soup’s sweet, savory notes echo the comforting essence of clam chowder, minus the seafood.
Don’t miss the chance to experiment with flavorful variations, either. Drizzle a bit of truffle oil for an elevated experience or sprinkle some crispy pancetta on top for a savory crunch. The possibilities are endless and only limited by your imagination.
A Family Favorite
Being a mother to Erin and Samantha, I’m always on the lookout for dishes that not only taste great but are also kid-friendly. This soup hits the mark every time. Its creamy texture and rich flavor make it an instant favorite, even for picky eaters. Watching my daughters enjoy a bowl of something wholesome and homemade warms my heart in ways that echo the cherished memories of my own childhood in Portland, Maine.

Regardless of how you choose to enjoy it, Caramelized Onion and Yam Soup will surely become a staple in your culinary repertoire, bringing warmth and comfort to every bowl.
What You’ll Need
- 2 large yams (about 2 pounds), peeled and diced
- 3 large onions, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 6 cups vegetable broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley or chives for garnish (optional)
Method
Step One
In a large pot, heat the olive oil and unsalted butter over medium heat.
Step Two
Add the thinly sliced onions to the pot. Cook them slowly, stirring occasionally, until they are deeply browned and caramelized, about 30-40 minutes.
Step Three
Once the onions are caramelized, add the peeled and diced yams to the pot. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5-7 minutes.
Step Four
Pour in the 6 cups of vegetable broth, bringing the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and let it simmer until the yams are very tender, about 20-25 minutes.
Step Five
Using an immersion blender, puree the soup until it is completely smooth. Alternatively, carefully transfer the soup in batches to a countertop blender and puree until smooth.
Step Six
Return the pureed soup to the pot if you used a countertop blender. Stir in the heavy cream, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step Seven
Allow the soup to heat through over low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 5-10 minutes to let the flavors meld together.
Step Eight
Serve the soup hot, garnished with fresh parsley or chives if desired. Enjoy!
