I’m delighted to introduce you to this fresh and crunchy Celery Seed Coleslaw, a recipe that resonates with my West Coast upbringing and fascination for contrasting flavors. This coleslaw is not your average side dish, but rather a palate pleasure that marries simplicity and excitement with its texture and a distinctive blend of subtle sweetness and tangy kick. The star of this dish, however, is the often-underestimated celery seed; an ingredient that packs an enormous punch despite its tiny size. This recipe is close to my heart, not only because it’s a hit in my Californian kitchen, but more so as I relish the intricate dance of East meets West on my taste buds.
The Dance of Flavors
Minor yet mighty, the humble celery seed has an earthy, savory flavor that helps bring out the distinctive taste of the coleslaw. The creamy smoothness of mayonnaise complemented by the bright, crisp flavors of carrots, cabbage and onion creates a delightful juxtaposition that assures every bite is memorable. Celery Seed Coleslaw might remind you of the traditional coleslaw we’re all familiar with, but the Gujarati flair and ingenuity seen in this recipe elevates it to another level.

What You’ll Need
- 1/2 head green cabbage, finely chopped
- 2 large carrots, peeled and shredded
- 1/2 red onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon celery seed
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1/4 cup white vinegar
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Method
Step One
Start by chopping the green cabbage and red onion into fine pieces. At the same time, peel the carrots and shred them into fine strips. Collect all the chopped and shredded veggies in a large mixing bowl.
Step Two
In a separate bowl, prepare the dressing for the coleslaw. Pour the mayonnaise into this bowl. Then, add the celery seed, white sugar, and white vinegar. Mix these ingredients well until a smooth mixture is formed.
Step Three
Pour the prepared dressing over the chopped vegetables in the large bowl. Toss them together until all the vegetables are evenly coated with the dressing.
Step Four
Now, season the coleslaw with salt and black pepper to your liking. Give it a final toss and make sure the seasoning is well distributed throughout the mix.
Step Five
Once ready, refrigerate the coleslaw for about 2 hours before serving. This allows the flavors to meld together and intensifies the taste. The celery seed coleslaw is now ready to be enjoyed as a fresh and delicious side dish.
