I have a deep love for crafting dishes that represent my roots and heritage while embracing the vibrant culinary scene of Miami, my home. One such dish that I absolutely adore is the Chayote Casserole. Not only does it encompass the warmth of homely comfort food, but it also delivers a unique taste that is exceptionally satisfying.
A Peek into the Chayote Casserole’s Delight
The Chayote Casserole gives a tribute to veggies, specifically the chayote which is a staple in the Caribbean and Latin American diets. The ingredients come together to create a rich, creamy, and cheesy delight that has an unforgettable taste. But that’s not all. This dish is also brimming with health benefits. Chayote is a low-calorie and fibre-packed vegetable that may help in managing weight and promoting heart health. Additionally, the calcium-loaded cheeses and protein-rich milk contribute to the overall nutritional value of the dish.
Familiar yet Unique
This recipe bears resemblance to traditional casseroles or gratin dishes, as it bakes the star ingredient under a layer of cheese and breadcrumbs. However, the use of chayote instead of more typical choices like potatoes or cauliflower, makes it stand out with a mild, nutty flavor that’s unique yet intriguing.
For a wholesome meal, pairing this Chayote Casserole with other Spanish or Caribbean dishes can create a dining experience that is both comforting and exciting. Whether it’s savoured with a portion of Arroz con Pollo or enjoyed next to a helping of Spanish Paella, this casserole is sure to liven up your meal times.
So, whether you’re a vegetarian looking for a hearty dish, a home cook looking for a new recipe to try, or someone looking to recreate the flavors of Caribbean and Spanish kitchens, give this Chayote Casserole a whirl. It promises a delightful blend of flavors, a cultural culinary exploration, and a connection to food that transcends borders.
What You’ll Need
- 4 medium-sized chayotes
- 2 tablespoons of salt
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
- 1 cup of whole milk
- 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
- 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs
- 1 tablespoon of chopped parsley for garnish
Method
Step One
Begin by preparing the chayotes. First, peel them and then cut them into half, remove the core from each half. After cleaning, thinly slice them. Put your sliced chayotes in a bowl and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of salt. Mix it well and let them sit for about 15 minutes.
Step Two
While the chayotes are resting, prepare your cheese sauce. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Gradually stir in the flour until you get a smooth paste. Slowly whisk in the milk, constantly stirring to avoid lumps. Continue stirring until the mixture thickens. Add in the shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheese, whisk until melted and combined. Add 1 tablespoon of salt, black pepper, and nutmeg. Remove from heat once the sauce is smooth and creamy.
Step Three
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onions and minced garlic, sauté until translucent. Pat dry the chayotes, then add them to the skillet. Cook for about 10 minutes or until they soften.
Step Four
Now, pour the cheese sauce over the chayotes in the skillet. Stir it well so the chayotes are fully coated with the sauce. Transfer the mixture to a baking dish. Spread the breadcrumbs evenly on top.
Step Five
Bake the casserole in your preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly. Once done, remove it from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Sprinkle the chopped parsley on top for garnish before serving.
Enjoy your delicious Chayote Casserole!
