What You’ll Need
- 3 large Mayan sweet onions (peeled and thinly sliced)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 2 cloves of garlic (minced)
- 1 cup white wine
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup grated Sharp Cheddar cheese
- 1 cup bread crumbs
- 1/2 cup fresh parsley (chopped)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 2 fruits of your choice (apple, banana, or pear are recommended)
Method
Step One
Start by preheating your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a casserole dish and set it aside for later use.
Step Two
In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the thinly sliced Mayan sweet onions. Cook the onions until they become translucent and start to caramelize. This process may take about 15 to 20 minutes.
Step Three
Add the minced garlic to the skillet with the onions, cook this until the garlic becomes fragrant. This should take about 1 to 2 minutes. Pour in the white wine, and allow it to simmer until the wine has reduced by half.
Step Four
Stir in the heavy cream, and season the mixture with salt and black pepper as desired. Allow this to simmer for additional 5 minutes.
Step Five
Gradually mix in the Parmesan and Cheddar cheese, and keep stirring until the cheese melts completely. Transfer the mixture to the greased casserole dish, spreading it evenly.
Step Six
In a separate bowl, combine the bread crumbs, chopped fresh parsley, and olive oil. Sprinkle this mixture over the top of the onion and cheese mixture in the casserole dish.
Step Seven
Place the casserole dish in the preheated oven, and bake for about 25 to 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbling. Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.
Step Eight
While the casserole is baking, peel and slice the fruits of your choice. When the casserole is about to serve, sprinkle the sliced fruits on top adding a sweet note to your savory casserole.
