In this vibrant stir fry, the comforting tastes of Midwest embodied in the fresh cabbage, tender chicken and hearty broth meet the exotic flavors of ginger, garlic, and a blend of robust Asian sauces. The result is a dish that is wholesome, homely, and yet intriguing, much like our Mom’s recipes that kept us eagerly waiting for supper. It’s reminiscent of how our family dinners were — simple, satisfying and filled with love.

Health Benefits

Beyond its delightful flavors, the Chinese Cabbage and Chicken Stir Fry brings an array of health benefits to the table. Cabbage is known for its rich source of vitamins C and K and dietary fiber. The chicken breast is a great source of lean protein, while the colorful assembly of other vegetables delivers a power-pack of essential nutrients, antioxidants, and fiber. The ginger and garlic not only provide a depth of flavor, but are also celebrated for their anti-inflammatory properties and numerous other health benefits.

A Versatile Dish

Beyond being a standalone delight, Chinese Cabbage and Chicken Stir Fry could work remarkably well with a serving of fried rice or a bowl of noodles. If you’re a fan of heat, consider coupling it with spicy Szechuan dishes. Its versatility is part of its charm, making it an easy fit for lunch boxes, family meals and even entertaining guests.

Whether you have your roots in the Midwest or not, this dish offers a delightful balance between comforting familiarity and tantalizing novelty. And every time I make it, I’m reminded of what I love most about cooking – the blending of flavors, cultures, and memories to create a dish that’s more than the sum of its parts. Here’s to making our own tapestry of tastes with Chinese Cabbage and Chicken Stir Fry!

What You’ll Need

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 1 large chinese cabbage, chopped
  • 2 medium carrots, julienned
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 6 green onions, chopped
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
ALLERGENS: Chicken, Soy, Oyster, Sesame

Method

Step One

Begin by chopping the chicken into bite-sized pieces. Heat up the vegetable oil in a large frying pan or wok over medium heat. Add the chicken to the pan and sauté until fully cooked and golden. Once done, remove the chicken from the pan and set it aside.

Step Two

In the same pan, add a bit more oil if needed. Add the minced garlic and ginger into the pan and sauté until fragrant. Then add the chinese cabbage, carrots, red bell pepper and green onions. Stir fry for about 5-7 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.

Step Three

In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, cornstarch, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, red pepper flakes and chicken broth. Pour this sauce mixture into the pan with the vegetables. Let it simmer for a few minutes to thicken, stirring constantly

Step Four

Add the cooked chicken back into the frying pan and stir it into the vegetable and sauce mixture. Allow everything to simmer together for a few minutes so that the flavors blend together. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step Five

Finally, stir in the sesame oil and turn off the heat. Transfer your stir fry to a serving dish, and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired. Serve hot with a side of rice or noodles. Enjoy your Chinese Cabbage and Chicken Stir Fry!
