Chinese Ginger Garlic Bok Choy Stir Fry

As a testament to my love for dishes that not only taste great but also provide stellar health benefits, today I share with you one of my personal favorites – the Chinese Ginger Garlic Bok Choy Stir Fry. Brought up in a family that swears by the comforting goodness of Italian-American cuisine, my culinary adventures have often led me far and wide, ushering in new flavors and experiences.

Navigating Beyond Tradition

In my early days, the humble kitchen of my Italian grandparents was my playground. The aromas of spaghetti and meatballs wafting from simmering pots invariably provided the backdrop to countless cherished memories. However, my culinary curiosity encouraged me to wander beyond these familiar territories and embrace the tantalizing flavors scattered across the globe. Hence, my foray into the vibrant world of Chinese cuisine began, and I have been enchanted ever since.

A Healthy, Heartwarming Stir-fry

The Chinese Ginger Garlic Bok Choy Stir Fry is a perfect example of how wholesome ingredients can result in a masterpiece that bursts with flavors yet remains rooted in health. Bok choy, the star here, is a nutritional powerhouse, packed with vitamins A, C, and K. Simultaneously, garlic and ginger provide a potent punch of antioxidants that enhance overall wellness. A dish as vibrant and versatile has a place in any culinary repertoire.

The profile of this delightful stir-fry shares a lot with traditional Chinese Bok Choy dishes. The inevitable crunch of bok choy contrasts beautifully with the fiery heat of ginger and the mellow warmth of garlic—paired with something delicate and aromatic like steamed jasmine rice or a spicy protein like Chicken Tikka Masala, it works like magic.

Unveiling Layers of Flavor

This dish strikes a perfect balance with the smoky hint of soy sauce marrying the robust flavors of garlic and ginger. A final scattering of sesame seeds brings in an added crunch, which, although optional, I highly recommend. Every component gets a chance to shine, contributing its unique voice to this symphony of flavors.

In the end, the pleasure of whipping up the Chinese Ginger Garlic Bok Choy Stir Fry lies not just in the eating but also in the act of creation. Like hiking, a cherished activity of mine, you get to enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Each step unfolds a new pleasure, a new discovery, making the entire process a celebration of love for good food and good health.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger, minced
  • 1.5 pounds of bok choy, sliced
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon of cold water
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds (Optional)
ALLERGENS: soy, sesame

Method

Step One

In a large wok or frying pan, heat up the vegetable oil over medium heat.

Step Two

Add the minced garlic and fresh ginger to the pan. Sauté them in the oil until they become fragrant. This usually takes about 2-3 minutes. Be careful not to let them burn.

Step Three

Add the sliced bok choy to the pan with the sautéed garlic and ginger. Stir fry the bok choy for about 5 minutes, until it’s wilted and bright green.

Step Four

Add the 1/2 cup of water to the pan and cover it. Let the bok choy steam for about 5 minutes, or until it’s tender.

Step Five

In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, cornstarch, and a tablespoon of cold water. Stir until the cornstarch is fully dissolved. This mixture will be used to make a sauce for the stir fry.

Step Six

Uncover the pan and pour the soy sauce mixture over the bok choy. Stir well to ensure that all of the bok choy is covered in sauce. Continue to stir fry for another 2-3 minutes, until the sauce has thickened.

Step Seven

Optional: Toast the sesame seeds in a small, dry pan over medium heat until they’re golden brown. Sprinkle these toasted sesame seeds over the stir fry before serving. Enjoy your Chinese Ginger Garlic Bok Choy Stir Fry!
