As I sit here, pen poised, ready to share with you a beloved recipe, memories come flooding back from the first time I prepared Chocolate Dipped Tamarillos. On one hand, this delicacy of dipped fruit, presented on a stick for ease and elegance, reminds me of summertime seafood visits up the New England coast; decadent lobster and soft-shell crab served on wooden skewers. Yet, on the other hand, the indulgent dip of dark chocolate teases the essence of my Irish roots; delicious, comforting, and irresistible dark chocolate desserts.

The Inspiration Behind Chocolate Dipped Tamarillos

My family, spanning across Boston and Emerald Isle, has been my greatest culinary inspiration, and while the ingredients for my Chocolate Dipped Tamarillos aren’t directly from the family cookbook, the spirit with which we approach cooking is at its core. My lovely Laura and my little boy light up with joy when I prepare these sweet treats, further pouring love into the mix with every chocolate dip.

Health Benefits of Tamarillos

But let’s talk about the star of the dish – the tamarillo. This exotic fruit not only introduces a unique tanginess to contrast the richness of the dark chocolate, it also boasts a plethora of health benefits. Tamarillos are packed with vitamins A, C, and E and are a good source of dietary fibre, making this a surprisingly guilt-free dessert. You can find more about the health benefits of tamarillos at Healthline. And, let’s not forget the dark chocolate. Rich in antioxidants and considered heart-friendly, there is a reason guilt and chocolate rarely share the same table! More about the health benefits of dark chocolate can be found in this enlightening BBC Good Food Guide.

Chocolate Dipped Tamarillos are a versatile dessert that could easily stand-alone or pair wonderfully with a simple vanilla panna cotta or a scoop of fresh mint ice cream. Personally, I find it to be the perfect finale to a night of grilled seafood, a nod to my New England roots, bringing a sweet ending to any summer gathering or cosy winter dinner.

What You’ll Need

  • 6 fresh tamarillos
  • 1 1/2 cups of dark chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 6 wooden skewers or popsicle sticks
ALLERGENS: Dark chocolate chips, coconut oil

Method

Step One

Begin by preparing the tamarillos for dipping. To do this, remove the skin of the tamarillos by making a shallow cut on the bottom of each fruit and blanching them in boiling water for about 30 seconds. Then, quickly transfer them to a bowl of cold water to cool. The skin should now peel off easily.

Step Two

Once you have removed the skins, insert a wooden skewer or popsicle stick into the stalk end of each tamarillo, ensuring it is firmly in place without penetrating through the other side of the fruit.

Step Three

In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the dark chocolate chips and the coconut oil. Heat the mixture in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each microwave session until the chocolate and oil have completely melted and combined into a smooth mixture.

Step Four

Hold each tamarillo by its skewer and dip it into the melted chocolate, turning to ensure all sides are evenly coated. Allow any excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl.

Step Five

After dipping each tamarillo, roll it in the granulated sugar, ensuring it is well coated on all sides. For best results, do this while the chocolate is still wet.

Step Six

Place the dipped and sugar coated tamarillos on a baking sheet lined with wax paper. Allow them to harden at room temperature or in the fridge. Once the chocolate has set, your Chocolate Dipped Tamarillos are ready to be served and enjoyed.
