Healthful Charm of the Recipe

This recipe brings a lot more to the table than just a delicious and comforting drink. The combination of cloves, cinnamon, and oranges lends it distinct health benefits. It is no secret that oranges are packed with Vitamin C, a crucial element that helps strengthen our immune system. Cloves, on the other hand, are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and can aid digestion. Last but not the least, cinnamon is believed to have medicinal qualities and is rich in antioxidants.

A Family Tradition with a Twist

This hot chocolate recipe, although not a staple in the traditional Italian-American cuisine that my grandparents nurtured me with, was introduced to me by my cherished Nonna one Christmas. It has since been my special winter warming drink that I enjoy individually and with my family. The aromatic spices borrowed from my family’s holiday recipes paired with the warmth of the cocoa resonates deeply with my love for traditional cooking.

Despite its individualistic charm, this Cinnamon and Clove Infused Hot Chocolate pairs incredibly well with a multitude of dishes. It’s a great companion to a hearty breakfast like pancakes or French toast, but also serves splendidly with a slice of rich chocolate cake in the evening or a piece of warm apple pie. This versatile beverage truly shines in any culinary scenario.

As I tie my apron every winter evening and let the aroma of cloves and cinnamon gently permeate the kitchen, I am instantaneously transported back to my happy childhood days. This Cinnamon and Clove Infused Hot Chocolate, studded with the warm nostalgia of precious family traditions, has warmed our hearts for years now and continues to do so. I hope it brings the same comfort and joy to your home as it does to mine.

What You’ll Need

  • 1/2 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 4 cups of milk
  • 1 cup of heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon of whole cloves
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 orange (for zest)
  • Whipped cream (for topping)
  • Cinnamon powder (for dusting)
ALLERGENS: Milk, Heavy cream, Whipped cream

Method

Step One

In a bowl, mix together the unsweetened cocoa powder and sugar. Set aside.

Step Two

In a large saucepan, combine the milk and heavy cream and heat over medium heat until hot, but not boiling.

Step Three

Stir the cocoa and sugar mixture into the milk. Keep stirring until the cocoa and sugar are completely dissolved.

Step Four

Add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, a pinch of salt, and the vanilla extract. Zest the orange directly into the saucepan.

Step Five

Reduce heat to low, cover the saucepan, and let your hot chocolate mixture simmer for about 15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent it from burning at the bottom.

Step Six

Strain the hot chocolate mixture through a fine mesh sieve to remove the cinnamon sticks and cloves.

Step Seven

Pour the hot chocolate into cups or mugs, top with whipped cream, and dust with cinnamon. Serve your Cinnamon and Clove Infused Hot Chocolate warm and enjoy!
