About Cornbread

Welcome food lovers! If there is one bread which radiates summertime sunshine and enrobes you into a warm Southern embrace, it is the classic, tried-and-true Cornbread. Traditionally made with core ingredients like yellow cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, milk, egg and vegetable oil, this bread is nothing less than a culinary powerhouse, enthralling taste buds far and wide.

Mouth watering cornbread

Interestingly, the beauty of this bread doesn’t lie in its simplicity alone. It is its versatility that often brings cooks and food enthusiasts under its spell. For instance, it equally shines as a sweet side, a dunk-in stew companion, or simply as a delicious breakfast toast. But what truly sets it apart from other breads is how each nuanced flavour collectively contributes to creating something spectacular.

Metamorphosis of Cornbread

Deep rooted in Native American food culture, Cornbread travelled through time and kitchens to become a Southern US food staple. The original version was a straightforward unleavened flatbread made with ground cornmeal. Entering the multifarious American kitchens, it underwent a metamorphosis with each region adding its own twist. Today, it embraces countless variations, featuring additions such as cheese, jalapenos, bacon, and even sweet incarnations with added honey or fruits.

The Perfect Complement to Many A Dish

While it is a delight to savor on its own, Cornbread truly comes to life when paired with a variety of dishes. It is the quintessential partner to classic American comfort foods like Chili and Brunswick Stew. A warm slice of cornbread can soak up the rich stew gravy, making each bite a harmony of flavors. Moreover, it is a welcome accompaniment with Southern Collard Greens, as the sweetness balances the bitterness of the greens masterfully.

As always, there are no fixed rules in the kitchen. Dare to experiment and see how this versatile wonder complements your favorite dishes. So, next time you’re in the mood to bake, make some room for our hero – Cornbread. And tell us, how you loved it!

What You’ll Need

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
ALLERGENS: gluten, milk, egg

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit (220 degrees Celsius). At the same time, grease a 9-inch round cake pan or cast-iron skillet and set aside.

Step Two

In a large bowl, mix together the yellow cornmeal, all-purpose flour, white sugar, baking powder, and salt. Ensure that all the dry ingredients are well combined.

Step Three

In another bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and vegetable oil. Make sure the wet ingredients are thoroughly mixed.

Step Four

Gradually add the wet ingredient mixture into the dry ingredient mixture. Stir until the ingredients are just combined. Be careful not to overmix; it’s okay if there are a few lumps.

Step Five

Pour the cornbread batter into the prepared cake pan or skillet. Level the top with a spatula.

Step Six

Bake the cornbread for approximately 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center of the cornbread comes out clean.

Step Seven

Remove the cornbread from the oven and allow it to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your freshly baked cornbread while it’s warm.
