There’s something magical about the bold flavors and rustic charm of the Cumin and Asafoetida Flatbreads, a lovely twist on traditional Irish flatbreads featuring a blend of old-world spices. Born into an Irish family in Boston and having grown up around the enchanting aromas of my grandparents’ kitchen, I hold an affinity towards dishes that blend cultures, are holistic in appeal, and oh-so-delicious.
Nutritious and Flavorful: The Perfect Balance
Food needs to appeal to the taste buds just as much as it should contribute to overall wellbeing, and these flatbreads are a testament to this balance. The inclusion of whole wheat flour gives these flatbreads a healthy twist – it’s a great source of dietary fiber, aiding in digestion and promoting a feeling of fullness. I love how this recipe allows me to incorporate health benefits in a delightful way, a touch that Laura and I constantly seek to include in our dishes, especially now as parents to our little boy.
A Family-friendly Recipe with an International Touch
Another reason to love the Cumin and Asafoetida Flatbreads? They’re truly family-friendly. These flatbreads are an embodiment of my appreciation for wholesome and hearty meals that can bring the family together. They are incredibly versatile, too – perfect as a side with your favorite stew, or even a pizza base for a casual family night.
Inspired by the classic Irish flatbreads, I’ve added a little finesse to the recipe with the use of aromatic cumin seeds and asafoetida, that promise a gustatory journey to India. It’s these unique elements that make these flatbreads a sure-fire hit at home.
Evoke Effortless Elegance
Creating these flatbreads is like honoring the memory of my grandparents and rekindling those nostalgic cooking sessions with them. Just as they believed, everything cooked from the heart is bound to taste exceptional. These flatbreads may be simple, but they have an inherent elegance that can transform a regular dining experience into something memorable.
With plenitude in flavor, a health-oriented perspective, and a hint of nostalgia, it’s no surprise why I invariably find myself pulled back to the recipe for the Cumin and Asafoetida Flatbreads. After all, isn’t the true beauty of cooking in honoring tradition while articulating a personal touch? That’s exactly what these flatbreads represent for me.
What You’ll Need
- 1.5 cups of whole wheat flour
- 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
- Half teaspoon salt
- Half teaspoon cumin seeds
- A pinch of asafoetida
- 0.75 cups of water
- Extra flour for dusting
Method
Step One
First, take a large bowl and add in the 1.5 cups of whole wheat flour, half a teaspoon of salt, cumin seeds, and a pinch of asafoetida. Mix these dry ingredients together until well combined.
Step Two
Next, make a well in the center of the dry mix. Pour in the 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and start to combine. The mixture will start to become crumbly.
Step Three
Slowly begin to add the 0.75 cups of water while kneading the dough. Continue kneading for about 10 minutes, or until the dough becomes soft and smooth.
Step Four
Cover the dough and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
Step Five
After the dough has rested, divide it into small balls. Use extra flour for dusting your surface, then roll each ball out into flat rounds shape to make your flatbreads.
Step Six
Heat a pan over medium heat and place a flatbread onto it. Cook until bubbles start to appear, and then flip over to cook the other side.
Step Seven
Repeat this process with all the flatbread rounds. Your Cumin and Asafoetida Flatbreads are ready to be served. These can be served with any curry, dhal or even just plain butter. Enjoy!
