As a culinary enthusiast from Charleston, South Carolina, I’ve always had a keen interest in experimenting with different tastes. My latest infatuation takes us far from the Southern fried chicken and hot buttered biscuits that I’m known for. I’m talking about a tropical delicacy that’s admittedly a bit controversial: the Durian Smoothie. One sip of this exotic blend will take your taste buds on an unforgettable tropical journey.

Durian Smoothie

The Unique Charm of Durian

The humble Durian, known as the king of fruits in Southeast Asia, can be a shock to the senses. Its strong scent and distinct flavor can be divisive, but when blended into a decadent smoothie, it transforms into something truly delightful. The creamy texture of Durian, complemented with milk (or almond milk for a vegan twist), sweet honey and refreshing ice, becomes a perfect treat for a hot summer day.

The Healthful Side of This Tropical Treat

What’s amazing about this Durian Smoothie is that it doesn’t just offer an adventurous taste experience, it’s also loaded with nutritional benefits. Durians are high in fiber, vitamin C, and several important minerals. Additionally, making this recipe with almond milk adds a dose of protein and heart-healthy fats. This smoothie is a delicious way to keep your body fueled and satisfied.

Whether you’re a fan of the Southern fried favorites I grew up with or you relish the chance to try more adventurous dishes, I firmly believe that everyone can find something to love in this Durian smoothie recipe. Its bold flavors, creamy texture, and surprising health benefits prove that sometimes, venturing out of your culinary comfort zone can yield truly delicious results.

Paring this Smoothie with Other Dishes

This Durian Smoothie pairs wonderfully with lighter fares, such as a simple avocado toast or a spicy crab salad. Its rich and creamy texture, coupled with its unique flavor profile, also make it a fitting complement to spicy Asian dishes, providing a refreshing counterpoint to the heat.

I hope you fall in love with this Durian Smoothie like I did. This intersection of Southern comfort and tropical adventure is where culinary magic truly happens. Enjoy!

What You’ll Need

  • 2 whole Durians
  • 2 cups of Milk or Almond Milk
  • 4 tablespoons of Honey
  • 2 cups of Ice
  • 1/2 cup of Condensed Milk (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon of Vanilla Extract (optional)
ALLERGENS: Durians, Milk, Almond Milk, Honey, Condensed Milk

Method

Step One

Start by opening the durians. Place the sharp edge of a large knife into the top center of the durian, and apply force to cut the durian open into two halves.

Step Two

Remove the durian flesh from the shell using a spoon. Be careful to avoid the large seed in each durian pod. You should have enough to make 2 cups of durian flesh.

Step Three

Place the durian flesh into a blender. Desirable to use a high-powered blender!

Step Four

Add 2 cups of milk or almond milk to the blender. If you prefer a creamier texture or a sweeter taste, you can add half a cup of condensed milk to the mix.

Step Five

Into this mixture, add 4 tablespoons of honey. If you wish to add a hint of another flavor, you can add a teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Step Six

Add 2 cups of ice to the blender. The ice will chill your smoothie and give it a refreshing texture.

Step Seven

Blend all the ingredients together until you get a smooth, creamy consistency. This should take about 1-2 minutes.

Step Eight

Pour your durian smoothie into glasses and it’s ready to serve! This recipe should make about 2-3 servings of durian smoothie.
