My Tryst with the Dutch Meatballs in Tomato Sauce

As a native New Yorker, I’ve bore witness to an array of different cultures converging on the city’s bustling streets. This recipe, with its blend of spice and succulence, perfectly mirrors that diversity. Being an actor by profession, I’ve always been intrigued by the stories each cuisine tells. The Dutch Meatballs in Tomato Sauce recipe tells a similar story of differing backgrounds harmoniously fused together.

Inspired by renowned Dutch chef Yvette van Boven, known for her effortless twists on traditional recipes into dishes that truly sing, I decided to explore the Dutch cuisine. I found a classic treat in this mixture of ground beef and pork gently seasoned with nutmeg and garlic, then doused in a tangy tomato sauce lightly sweetened with a touch of sugar.

Cultural Confluence on a Plate

What stands out for me in these Dutch Meatballs is how they draw similarities to New York’s beloved Italian meatballs. The richness of the meat, the heartiness of the tomato sauce, and the delightful use of nutmeg do echo some part of the city’s vibrant Italian-American culinary heritage. So you can see how this dish, with its Dutch origins and Italian resemblance, resonates with me significantly.

If you want to complete your Dutch Culinary Journey, you might want to serve this with a side of Stamppot, a Dutch mashed potato dish. You’ll find this duo making it to your list of comfort food, just like it did to mine!

The Dutch Meatballs in Tomato sauce isn’t just a recipe for me; it’s a tasteful tale of New York’s diverse culture, neatly served on a plate. It’s a tale I enjoy cooking, serving, and most importantly, tasting! If you’re passionate about culinary explorations that transcend geographical boundaries, this recipe is just the hearty treat for you!

What You’ll Need

  • 1 1/2 pounds of ground beef
  • 1/2 pound of ground pork
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup of bread crumbs
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 14oz can of diced tomatoes
  • 1 8oz can of tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
ALLERGENS: Beef, Pork, Egg, Wheat, Onion, Garlic, Butter

Method

Step One

Combine ground beef, ground pork, egg, bread crumbs, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, ground nutmeg, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well integrated.

Step Two

Form the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter. Set aside.

Step Three

In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Once the butter is fully melted, add the prepared meatballs. Brown the meatballs on all sides, ensuring they’re cooked through. This should take approximately 10 minutes.

Step Four

Once the meatballs are browned, add in the can of diced tomatoes along with its juice, the can of tomato sauce, white vinegar, sugar, and ground cinnamon. Stir gently to combine.

Step Five

Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and allow the mixture to simmer for about 30 minutes. Make sure to stir occasionally to prevent sticking and to ensure the meatballs are being evenly coated.

Step Six

After simmering, the sauce should have thickened and the flavors melded together. Season with additional salt and pepper if necessary, then serve the Dutch Meatballs hot with your preferred side dish.
