Finding a Balance

Creating this Fiddlehead and Goat Cheese Quiche evokes a delightful dance between my two cultures. Just like harmony found in fusion music, this dish takes the western idea of a quiche and adds a certain something from my Indian heritage. It reminds me of my childhood in Gujarat where a plethora of spices and regional ingredients were used to create delicious and wholesome meals every day. It’s also similar to a Tofani tart, a savory Gujarati dish, Yet, this recipe carries a lighter touch with the use of local Californian ingredients like fiddleheads and goat cheese.

A Nourishing Twist

Furthermore, this recipe isn’t just about taste and culture – it’s also incredibly healthy. Seasoned with a touch of dried thyme and basil, this quiche is a savory sensation ready to tickle your taste buds with its array of flavors. Thyme’s health benefits include delivering a significant amount of vitamin C and boosting your immunity, while basil is a good source of vitamin K and supports heart health. Fiddleheads, the star ingredient of this recipe, are packed with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, rich in dietary fiber, and full of antioxidants, contributing to a wealth of health benefits.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 pie crust
  • 2 cups of fresh fiddleheads, cleaned and trimmed
  • 1 cup goat cheese
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon of dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon of dried basil
  • 1/4 cup of finely chopped red onion
  • 1/2 cup of diced tomatoes
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
ALLERGENS: Gluten, dairy, eggs

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. While the oven is heating, place your pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish and set aside.

Step Two

Bring a pot of water to boil over high heat. Once boiling, add the fiddleheads and blanch for about 5 minutes. Drain, then immediately rinse with cold water to stop the cooking process. Set the fiddleheads aside.

Step Three

In a large bowl, combine the goat cheese, eggs, milk, salt, black pepper, dried thyme, and dried basil. Whisk until the mixture is well blended. Then, stir in the blanched fiddleheads, chopped red onion, diced tomatoes, and minced garlic.

Step Four

Pour the quiche mixture into your prepared pie crust, making sure the ingredients are evenly distributed.

Step Five

Place the pie dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 35-40 minutes, or until the quiche is set and lightly browned on top. If the crust begins to brown too quickly, cover it with aluminum foil.

Step Six

Remove the quiche from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your Fiddlehead and Goat Cheese Quiche while it is still warm!
