I have a deep affection for the Fig and Lemon Thyme Jam recipe, and there are so many reasons why. For starters, it marries two distinct flavors in a delightfully unpredictable way. As I was raised in the Pacific Northwest, I have an inherent appreciation for nature’s bounty. The sweet figs are reminiscent of Seattle’s wonderful late summer harvest. Incorporating the bold touch of citrus is a tribute to my supportive grandmother, a nod to her innumerable lemon trees back in Japan.

Fig and Lemon Thyme Jam

A Sweet Treat that’s Packed with Health Benefits

What I also value in this Fig and Lemon Thyme Jam recipe is how it encapsulates health benefits. Figs, being a treasure trove of dietary fiber and essential minerals like calcium and potassium, make the foundation of the jam extremely nutritious (Healthline). The lemon brings its share of vitamin C to the table, enhancing your immune system while making your taste buds sing. Then, the lemon thyme, a flavorful blast from my frequent culinary experiences in Japan, isn’t just there for the taste. This power herb has potential benefits for digestion, as well as antibacterial and antioxidant properties (Medical News Today).

Pairing Possibilities are Endless

What excites me further about this delightful jam is its versatility. It aligns with both my Northwestern love for comfort food sandwiches and my Japanese passion for creative sushi rolls. Spread it thinly inside a grilled cheese for a surprisingly sweet twist, or use it as a sauce with your next sushi roll adventure! Try it with
Fig and Prosciutto Tartines too – the savory prosciutto satisfyingly contrasting with the sweet/spicy jam.

When it comes down to it, this Fig and Lemon Thyme Jam recipe is a dance of cultures—a waltz between the comfort of the Pacific Northwest and the adventurous spirit of Japan, while carrying the added benefit of healthy, natural ingredients. It’s a fusion that mirrors the essence of my culinary journey over the years—bringing together who I am, where I come from, and the flavors I cherish.

What You’ll Need

  • 3 cups fresh figs, chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 lemon, zested and juiced
  • 4 sprigs fresh lemon thyme
  • 1/2 cup of water
ALLERGENS: None

Method

Step One

Start by preparing the fresh figs. Rinse them under cold water, pat dry and chop them into small pieces. Leave them aside for now.

Step Two

Place a large saucepan over medium heat. Add in the chopped figs, granulated sugar, the zest and juice of one lemon, fresh lemon thyme sprigs, and half a cup of water.

Step Three

Stir the mixture continuously until the sugar is fully dissolved. This may take a few minutes so be patient.

Step Four

Once the sugar is dissolved, reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer. It’s important to keep stirring often to dodge any chance of burning. You need to simmer it until it thickens. This can usually take around 30-40 minutes.

Step Five

When the jam mixture has thickened, take it off the heat. Remove the lemon thyme sprigs. Allow it to cool completely.

Step Six

Once cooled, transfer the jam into clean, sterilized jars. Seal the jars tightly and store them in a cool, dark place. You can also refrigerate if you want to use it immediately.
