Fried Dandelion Blossoms

A Fusion of Cultures

Inspired by my Pacific Northwest upbringing and my Japanese heritage, I love incorporating diverse ingredients and techniques into my culinary repertoire. Although this recipe deviates some from the typical sushi rolls and seafood dishes I typically craft, it echoes the inherent respect for nature found in both cultures. These Fried Dandelion Blossoms carry a hint of soulful comfort food from Seattle mingling delightfully with the essence of traditional Japanese tempura.

Embracing the Health-boosting Properties of Dandelions

Beyond being a culinary indulgence, Dandelion Blossoms bring along a multitude of health benefits. They are a rich source of vitamins A, C and K, and also boast of robust antioxidant properties. Moreover, their gentle bitterness is a great aid for digestion. Dusted with a hint of powdered sugar, the resulting golden fritters make for a well-balanced treat that treads the line between healthful and decadent.

While delightful on their own, these golden, crisp blossoms can also be served alongside a vibrant spring salad to add a unique texture and flavor contrast. You can also pair it with a light, refreshing spring soup to elevate a simple meal into an adventurous culinary journey.

Priceless in their unassuming charm and packed with flavor and health benefits, these Fried Dandelion Blossoms are a humble yet profound testament to the beauty of blending cultures and savoring the gifts of nature in their purest forms.

What You’ll Need

  • 24 fresh, large dandelion blossoms
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil for frying, about 1 cup
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar for dusting
ALLERGENS: Wheat, Egg, Milk

Method

Step One

Start by carefully washing the dandelion blossoms and gently pat them dry. Set them aside for now.

Step Two

In a mixing bowl, combine your dry ingredients – the all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Whisk them together until well combined.

Step Three

In a separate bowl, beat the egg. Then add the milk and vanilla extract into the egg, mixing well to create your wet ingredient mix.

Step Four

Slowly pour the wet ingredient mix into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Whisk them together until you have a smooth and well-combined batter.

Step Five

Heat up the vegetable oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. The oil should be at least a half-inch deep to ensure proper frying.

Step Six

Dip each dandelion blossom into the batter, making sure it is completely covered. Carefully place the coated blossom into the hot oil. Repeat this process with the remaining blossoms.

Step Seven

Fry the dandelion blossoms until they are golden brown, which will take about 2 to 3 minutes per side. Use a slotted spoon to flip them over and to remove them from the oil once they are done.

Step Eight

Place the fried blossoms on a paper towel to drain any excess oil. Allow them to cool slightly.

Step Nine

Dust the fried dandelion blossoms with powdered sugar before serving. Enjoy them while they’re still warm for the best taste.
