On my recent culinary adventure in Montana, nestled between rolling ranch and wild countryside, I first encountered these remarkable Garlic and Green Onion Mashed Potatoes. Now, each bite brings me right back to those sprawling landscapes, infusing our well-loved potato comfort food with a fresh burst of spring flavor.

Garlic and Green Onion Mashed Potatoes

A Taste of the Range

This humble dish draws deep from the rich tapestry of food traditions that have seen the people of Big Sky Country through long winters and bountiful summers. The unmistakable savory character of locally harvested garlic and green onions perfectly complements the creamy, buttery Yukon Gold potatoes. Much like the Bison Burgers we ranchers relish at a summer cookout, these potatoes offer a hearty, satisfying meal component that is made even more delightful by subtle local flavors.

The Health Benefits

Of course, the allure of Garlic and Green Onion Mashed Potatoes doesn’t end with their extraordinary taste. These nature-forged ingredients also pack a healthy punch. The garlic in this blend does more than just adding a scrumptious flavor, it also contains compounds with potent medicinal properties, including its ability to boost the immune system. Meanwhile, green onions are a source of vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin K. This makes these mashed potatoes not just satisfying and delicious, but also a wonderful way to boost your nutrient intake.

Ingredient Synergy – Transformative Flavor Combinations

The real magic of this recipe relies on how the distinct ingredients harmonize to create something entirely new. Inspired by similar dishes like Ina Garten’s Garlic Mashed Potatoes or the well-loved Crispy Smashed Potatoes with Green Harissa, the garlic, onions, and potato meld perfectly, each balancing the other, resulting in a seamless blend of flavors.

And, whether you’re pairing it with venison steaks or serving it alongside a beautifully roasted chicken for dinner, the distinct layers of flavor in these Garlic and Green Onion Mashed Potatoes work wonderfully well to enhance any main course.

What You’ll Need

  • 5 Pounds of Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 1 Cup of warm milk
  • 2 Tablespoons of butter
  • 1 Cup of finely chopped green onions
  • 5 Cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/2 Cup of sour cream
  • 1 Teaspoon of Salt
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Black Pepper
ALLERGENS: Milk, Butter, Sour cream

Method

Step One

Peel and quarter the Yukon Gold potatoes. Place the potatoes in a large pot, add enough water to cover, and bring to a boil. Cook until the potatoes are tender, which should take about 15-20 minutes.

Step Two

In the meantime, in a medium skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped green onions. Saute until they become soft and fragrant. This should take about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step Three

Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them well and return them to the pot. Add the warm milk, sour cream, salt, and black pepper. Using a potato masher, mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy.

Step Four

Stir in the garlic and green onion mixture into the mashed potatoes, ensuring it’s evenly distributed throughout. Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper if needed.

Step Five

Serve the Garlic and Green Onion Mashed Potatoes warm, with extra butter if desired. Enjoy!
