One of the dishes I hold dear to my heart, and one that transports me back to the aromatic, rustic kitchens of the Rocky Mountains is the Garlic and Holy Basil Mashed Potatoes. This recipe, mingled with a unique twist of fruits, challenges the traditional perception of mashed potatoes. The intriguing blend of holy basil and garlic, with a fruit bonus, adds another dimension to this classic dish – refreshing, zesty, and absolutely irresistible.

A Taste of the Mountains & the Health Benefits

This recipe, just like my mountain-inspired dishes, captures the essence of nature and the benefit of clean, unprocessed ingredients. The garlic and holy basil infusion provides more than just a boost of flavor. Garlic, celebrated for its antioxidant properties, is known to enhance heart health (source). Holy basil, on the other hand, is an incredible source of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, often used in Ayurvedic medicine to combat stress (source).

Pairing Possibilities

Our Garlic and Holy Basil Mashed Potatoes can easily hold their own as a sumptuous side, but their versatility makes it easy to pair with other flavors too. I personally relish it alongside a plate of seared trout or game meat – a remembrance of the hearty mountain fares from back home. It’s also an alluring match to a roast chicken, the herbs complementing the roasted flavors beautifully. For the vegetarians out there, this version of mashed potatoes goes extremely well with a chunky vegetable stir-fry or a hearty vegetable stew.

With love from my kitchen to yours, I present to you these exceptional Garlic and Holy Basil Mashed Potatoes. Try it, enjoy it, and let the blended tastes transport you to the tranquil heart of the Colorado mountains.

What You’ll Need

  • 8 medium potatoes
  • 6 cloves of garlic
  • 1 bunch of holy basil
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 4 tablespoons of butter
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
ALLERGENS: Milk, Butter

Method

Step One

Start by thoroughly washing your potatoes. Once cleansed, peel them and chop them into quarters. Place these chopped potatoes into a large pot of salted water. Bring the pot to boil, then lower the heat and let the potatoes simmer until they are fork-tender. This should take about 15 to 20 minutes.

Step Two

While your potatoes are boiling, mince your garlic cloves and chop your holy basil. In order to properly release the flavors, you might want to bruise the basil a little by gently crushing its leaves with the back of your knife.

Step Three

Once your potatoes are done, drain them then return them to the pot. Add in your minced garlic, chopped basil, butter, and milk. Start mashing everything together until you achieve your desired texture. If it appears too thick, you can add in more milk till it reaches your preferred consistency.

Step Four

Season your mashed potatoes with salt and pepper as per your taste. Give it a final stir to ensure that everything is well incorporated.

Step Five

Your Garlic and Holy Basil Mashed Potatoes are ready to be served! They are best enjoyed hot, and make a delicious accompaniment to a variety of main dishes.
