Why I Love Indian Garlic Fish
Please allow me to introduce you to a new love of mine – an Indian recipe named Garlic Fish that I found truly mesmerizing. You might be wondering, ‘Where’s the bridge between Eva’s Spanish and Caribbean culinary love and this remarkably flavorful Indian dish?’ Well, that’s exactly what captures my undivided attention and ignites my inspiration. Gastronomy knows no borders, and I’m always thrilled to sail off to uncharted culinary territories.
Off the Beaten Path
This Garlic Fish recipe, my dear gourmands, is my tribute to the limitless diversity that the culinary world has to show. It embodies the idea that we are forever students in the kitchen, always ready to learn and explore beyond our comfort zones – just like the legendary Madhur Jaffrey, an inspirational chef who has braided her heritage into her dishes and served it to the world, inspiring us to do the same.
A Whirl of Flavors
Living in Miami, the international gateway of flavors, I’m no stranger to bold dishes that offer a whirl of taste profiles, much like this Garlic Fish recipe. It’s a mingling of the tang of lemon juice, the kick of chili powder and fresh peppers, and the heartiness of coriander, all balanced by rich canola oil. The hint of turmeric adds an earthy note that unfolds a myriad of flavors all at once.
It’s not an understatement to say that this particular dish carries a bit of my soul, reminiscent of the finger-licking seafood you’d savor in the tropical warmth of the Caribbean. If you’ve enjoyed the Cuban classic – Pargo al Horno or oven-baked red snapper – you’ll find a familiar aromatic relationship in our Garlic Fish friend.
Tasting Beyond Borders
This Garlic Fish dish, whether served as a star centerpiece or a delightful side, can transform an ordinary meal into a grand experience. It pairs exceptionally well with a simple side of steamed basmati rice or a light, refreshing cucumber salad. Experiment, mix, mach, and most importantly, enjoy the process as much as the result. That is the spirit of fusion cooking.
So here’s to the trip to India, the culinary adventure, and the unending showers of love we pour into our dishes. Enjoy this Garlic Fish, and embrace the diversity of flavors life has to offer!
What You’ll Need
- 2 lbs tank or ocean fish fillets
- 10 cloves of garlic, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons of canola oil
- 1/2 tablespoon turmeric
- 1 tablespoon red chili powder
- 1 tablespoon coriander powder
- Salt to taste
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, finely chopped
- 2 green chili peppers, sliced
Method
Step One
Start by cleaning your fish fillets thoroughly. Make sure to remove any bones or skin before you proceed to the next step.
Step Two
In a large bowl , mix together the finely chopped garlic, turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. This will form the marinade for the fish.
Step Three
Place the fish fillets in the bowl with the marinade and mix well to ensure that each piece is evenly coated. Leave this marinating for about 30 minutes to absorb the flavors.
Step Four
While the fish is marinating, take this time to prepare the rest of your ingredients. Finely chop the fresh cilantro and slice the green chili peppers. These will be used later on.
Step Five
After the fish has been marinating for about 30 minutes, heat the canola oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Step Six
Once the oil is hot, add the fish fillets to the skillet. Cook each side for about 4-5 minutes, or until the fish is golden brown and crispy.
Step Seven
After all the fillets are cooked, remove them from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
Step Eight
Finally, sprinkle the cooked fish with the lemon juice, chopped cilantro, and sliced green chili peppers. Serve hot and enjoy your Garlic Fish!
