When it comes to the culinary arts, there’s nothing quite like the joy of sharing a beloved recipe. The Giants Swamp Taro Pie, a delectable vegetable-based concoction, is a recipe I hold close to my heart. Born from a fusion of my Pacific Northwest upbringing and my deep Japanese roots, this pie is not merely a dish—it embodies a cultural blend of ingredients and flavors that makes it uniquely its own.
The secret of Swamp Taro
One of my secret ingredients in this recipe is the giant swamp taro, an uncommon staple found in various Pacific cultures but seldom known in the western world. Rich in dietary fiber and essential vitamins, this powerhouse root vegetable not only adds a twist to the traditional pie but also provides numerous health benefits.
The subtle sweetness of the swamp taro is beautifully elevated by the vibrant citrus tang of fresh orange juice, giving this pie its unique and complex flavor profile. The addition of warm and aromatic spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, combined with the wholesome goodness of mixed berries, add layers to the taste that are wonderfully exquisite.
Pie: A Taste of Tradition
The pie crust is a recipe in its own right. Drawing parallels to classic double-crust apple pie, it envelops the filling in a cocoon of crisp and buttery goodness, adding that comforting touch every good pie needs.
After a fine meal of seafood, perhaps one of the sushi rolls I’m fond of whipping up, this Giant Swamp Taro Pie is a delightful way to end the evening. Its sumptuous appeal lies not just in its irresistible taste. This vegetable-laden dessert is a healthier option without compromising the satisfying indulgence of a well-made pie.
Whether you’re a seasoned baker or a novice looking for an adventure in the kitchen, do yourself a favor and give this Giant Swamp Taro Pie a go. Its unique taste and the nutritional punch it packs is certain to win hearts and palates alike!
What You’ll Need
- 2 cups of peeled and diced giant swamp taro
- 1 cup of fresh orange juice
- 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup of light brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg
- 2 cups of mixed berries (like strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries)
- 1 recipe for a 9 inch double crust pie
- 1 egg yolk, beaten with 2 tablespoons water (for egg wash)
- 2 tablespoons of butter, cut into small pieces
- Additional sugar for sprinkling
Method
Step One
In a large saucepan, mix together 2 cups of peeled and diced giant swamp taro, 1 cup of fresh orange juice, 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, 1/4 cup of light brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of cornstarch, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently to ensure the sugars and spices are fully dissolved.
Step Two
Reduce the heat to low, and let the mixture simmer for about 15-20 minutes, until the taro becomes soft.
Step Three
Remove from the heat and gently stir in the 2 cups of mixed berries. Allow the filling to cool while you prepare the pie crust.
Step Four
Prepare your recipe for a 9 inch double crust pie. Once the pie crust is ready, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Step Five
Pile the filling into your pie crust, spreading it evenly across the bottom. Dot the surface of the filling with 2 tablespoons of butter, cut into small pieces.
Step Six
Top the filling with the second pie crust. Trim the excess dough from the edges, and pinch the top and bottom crusts together to seal the pie.
Step Seven
Brush the top of the pie with a mixture of 1 egg yolk beaten with 2 tablespoons of water. This egg wash will help to give the pie a golden brown color as it bakes.
Step Eight
Sprinkle additional sugar over the top crust, then make small slits to allow steam to escape.
Step Nine
Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling. Remove from oven and let it cool before serving to allow the filling to set. Enjoy your Giant Swamp Taro Pie!
