About Gluten-Free Bazlama

Gluten-Free Bazlama

Welcome to your journey into the delicious world of Gluten-Free Bazlama! This bread is an outstanding alternative for those who crave the warm, soft, and airy delight of freshly baked bread but find themselves sensitive to gluten. Our take on this Turkish staple is not just a gluten-free masterpiece, it is also divinely tasty, oozing with rustic charm.

The Story Behind Gluten-Free Bazlama

This bread takes its name from the traditional Bazlama, a much-loved bread in Turkey, defined by its thick, soft texture and delectable, almost smoky, flavor from being typically cooked over a wood fire. We’ve reimagined this classic to suit gluten-free needs without sacrificing an ounce of its authentic charm.

At its heart, the Gluten-Free Bazlama shares kinship with culinary delights like the Indian Naan or Greek Pita. Its versatility is what brings it to the forefront of gluten-free culinary experiments. Whether you pair it with a bowl of heartwarming soup, use it to scoop up a delightful hummus, or simply enjoy it with a smear of butter, this bread is designed to elevate your meal.

The Secret to its Excellence

The secret to the Gluten-Free Bazlama’s soft texture and incredible flavor profile lies in the blend of ingredients. From high-quality gluten-free all-purpose flour, active dry yeast, xanthan gum, sugar, and salt for the dough, to the magical combination of warm water, top-grade olive oil, and eggs for the binder, this recipe guarantees a bread that is soft on the inside with a slightly crisp exterior.

Let’s not forget about the role of xanthan gum. Typically used as a substitute for gluten, xanthan gum is a key ingredient in our gluten-free Bazlama. It helps to secure the airy texture and perfect rise that one expects in great bread. However, if your flour blend already contains it, you can omit this addition.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 1/2 cups of gluten-free all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of xanthan gum (omit if your flour blend already contains it)
  • 2 teaspoons of sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/2 teaspoons) of active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 3/4 cup of warm water
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 egg
ALLERGENS: Egg

Method

Step One

Begin by mixing the gluten-free all-purpose flour, xanthan gum (unless your flour blend already contains it), sugar, active dry yeast, and salt in a large bowl.

Step Two

Heat the water until it’s warm but not hot. Then, slowly pour the warm water into the dry ingredient mix while stirring consistently.

Step Three

Add olive oil to the mixture and continue stirring until the elements are well combined.

Step Four

Crack an egg into the mixture and carefully stir it into the rest of the ingredients until smooth. Ensure you create a uniform and sticky dough.

Step Five

Cover the dough and let it rest for about 45 minutes or until it doubles in size.

Step Six

Once the dough has risen, divide it into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and flatten it with a rolling pin until you’ve achieved a disc shape about 1/4 inch thick.

Step Seven

Heat a non-stick frying pan or griddle over medium heat, and cook each side of the Bazlama for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown.

Step Eight

Let the Bazlama cool for a couple of minutes before serving. Enjoy your gluten-free Bazlama warm for the best flavor.
