Gluten-free Bialy

The Essence of Gluten-Free Bialy

With an impressive list of wholesome ingredients, this version of Gluten-Free Bialy is meticulously crafted using the choicest elements. Embracing a healthful approach, this artisan bread sidesteps the traditional use of wheat flour and welcomes the accommodating substitute of gluten-free all-purpose flour. The fermentation process is sparked by active dry yeast, while an interesting tryst of xanthan gum, salt, and sugar brings in consistency and taste.

If we talk about the bread’s overall structure, it follows a versatile dome shape with a dip at its center. The center is usually filled with a beautiful concoction of minced onions and poppy seeds, adding a lovely contrast to the bread’s body. The bread’s exterior is firm but leads to a delightfully chewy interior. The varying texture gives a unique mouthfeel, setting it apart from the usual bread variants.

Echoes of Flavors

Our Gluten-Free Bialy echoes its origins from the traditional Bialy, a Polish-Jewish bread roll. The original bialy, though similar, contains glutinous wheat flour, making it unsuitable for those adhering to a gluten-free diet. However, our gluten-free version stands as a fitting tribute to its more traditional cousin, without compromising on flavor, texture, or the delightful onion-poppy-seed center.

Pairing this bread with a selection of hearty soups, aromatic fresh salads, or even grilled proteins can create a meal to remember. Drizzle it with olive oil or a dab of butter and it becomes an inviting snack. The bread can also be split and toasted, building a base for your favorite sandwiches. With its versatile nature, this wondrous Gluten-Free Bialy makes a splendid companion to a host of dishes.

The Final Verdict

This gluten-free delicacy makes an ideal choice for those who are health conscious or have dietary restrictions. But beyond its healthful benefits, the Gluten-Free Bialy is about celebrating the diversity in breads – about relishing the exquisite interplay of flavors it brings to your plate. With its distinct properties, this bread marks a beautiful blend of tradition and innovation.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups Gluten-Free All Purpose Flour
  • 1 tablespoon Xanthan Gum
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast
  • 1 cup Water, warm
  • 1 tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 cup Onions, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Poppy Seeds
ALLERGENS: Eggs

Method

Step One

Combine 2 cups of Gluten-Free All Purpose Flour, 1 tablespoon Xanthan Gum, 1 teaspoon Salt, 1 tablespoon Sugar, and 2 1/4 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast together in a large mixing bowl.

Step Two

Create a well in the middle of the dry ingredients and pour in 1 cup of warm water, 1 tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar, and 2 tablespoons Olive Oil.

Step Three

Crack 2 Eggs into the well and mix the ingredients together until a dough starts to form. Ensure you mix until it is smooth and with no lumps.

Step Four

Cover the bowl with a cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place for about an hour or until it doubles in size.

Step Five

While waiting, sauté the minced onion for about 10 minutes or until they are golden brown. Move to one side to cool.

Step Six

Once the dough has risen, divide it into small round balls. Flatten each ball slightly and use your thumb to press a well in the centre.

Step Seven

Fill the well with the sautéed onions and sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of poppy seeds.

Step Eight

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the bialys onto a baking sheet, leaving a bit of space in between each one.

Step Nine

Bake for around 20-25 minutes, or until the bialys are golden brown.

Step Ten

Let the bialys cool for a while before serving. Enjoy your homemade Gluten-Free Bialys!
