Gluten-Free Challah

A Taste Without Compromise

One of the key traits of our Gluten-Free Challah is its remarkable ability to match the texture and flavor of its gluten-infused counterpart. This wholesome bread, with its tender crumbs and mildly sweet taste, encapsulates everything one would anticipate from a traditional challah. Its exquisite taste can be attributed to a harmonious blend of ingredients that work together to create a perfectly balanced flavor. Warm from the oven, the Gluten-Free Challah is a genuine treat for the senses.

A Holistic Approach to Baking

Healthy baking doesn’t have to imply compromise on flavor and texture. In creating our Gluten-Free Challah, we took inspiration from the traditional challah, and reinvented it using nutrient-rich arrowroot starch, psyllium husk powder and a gluten-free flour blend. We’ve added a pinch of xanthan gum to give it the perfect elasticity, and used high-quality canola or olive oil to offer a sumptuous softness to the texture. The result? A nutritious, gluten-free bread that doesn’t just taste good, but also nourishes your body.

Perfect Complement to Your Favorite Dishes

Our Gluten-Free Challah shines on its own, but it also pairs brilliantly with a range of dishes. It has a natural affinity with classic Jewish recipes such as brisket or chicken soup, making it a wonderful addition to any festivities like Shabbat dinners or holiday feasts. Moreover, its light sweetness and soft texture make it an ideal accompaniment for savory dishes, enhancing the dining experience by offering a delightful textural contrast.

Whether you’re indulging in a cozy, homely dinner, or hosting an extravagant feast, Gluten-Free Challah will elevate your culinary repertoire, creating memorable shared experiences around the dinner table.

What You’ll Need

  • 1.5 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 3 cups gluten-free flour blend
  • 2 tablespoons arrowroot starch
  • 2 tablespoons psyllium husk powder
  • 1 teaspoon xanthan gum
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup canola oil or olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 egg yolk beaten with 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds or poppy seeds for topping (optional)
ALLERGENS: yeast, eggs

Method

Step One

Combine the warm water, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar in a small bowl. Let it sit for about 10 minutes so the yeast can activate.

Step Two

In a large mixing bowl, combine the gluten-free flour blend, arrowroot starch, psyllium husk powder, xanthan gum, and kosher salt. Mix until the ingredients are thoroughly combined.

Step Three

Crack the eggs into the bowl with the dry ingredients. You may crack the eggs in a separate bowl first to avoid having shells in your dough. Add the canola oil and honey to the mixture.

Step Four

Slowly pour the yeast mixture into the bowl with the other ingredients. Using a mixer or a strong spoon, combine the ingredients until you have a sticky, uniform dough.

Step Five

Grease or line your baking tray and place the dough on top. Form the dough into the traditional Challah braid. If the dough is too sticky to handle, dust your hands with a bit of gluten-free flour.

Step Six

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Cover the dough loosely with a damp cloth and leave it to proof in a warm place for an hour or until it doubles in size.

Step Seven

Once the dough has proofed, brush the beaten egg yolk mixed with water on top for a shiny, golden crust. Sprinkle sesame seeds or poppy seeds on top of the Challah if desired.

Step Eight

Bake the Challah in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until it is golden and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Step Nine

Allow the Challah to cool on a wire rack before slicing. Enjoy your homemade, gluten-free Challah alone or with a delicious spread!
