Gluten-Free Irish Soda Bread

A Bread With Historic Roots

Originating from the green landscapes of Ireland, soda bread has a proud and rich history. It was created during the mid 19th century when bicarbonate of soda, also known as baking soda, was first introduced to the United Kingdom. The original recipe called for simple, easily accessible ingredients: soft wheat, baking soda, salt, and soured milk. Our Gluten-Free Irish Soda Bread carries this tradition forward while making it accessible to those following a gluten-free diet.

Similarities and Complementary Dishes

Soda bread is characteristically dense and rustic, striking a unique balance between a biscuit and bread. Its process of creation resembles that of a scone. When compared to other bread, you’ll find its closest comparison to be rustic country bread or a heavy biscuit.

Gluten-Free Irish Soda Bread doesn’t just stand alone as a snack but shines when paired with the right foods. Its hearty nature makes it the ideal accompaniment to soups and stews. Slathering some butter and honey on a slice makes for a filling breakfast. Moreover, pairing it with an Irish cheddar and stout fondue at your next dinner party could make for a memorable gastronomic experience!

The Magic of Gluten-Free

Our Gluten-Free Irish Soda Bread proves that gluten-free does not mean taste-free. It bursts with flavor and keeps the authenticity of the original recipe intact while skipping the gluten. It’s important to remember that gluten-free baking can sometimes turn out different than expected, but with our recipe, you’re sure to end up with a bread that’s deliciously close to the real deal.

So whether you’re hosting a St. Patrick’s Day feast or simply looking for a fresh bread recipe to try, our Gluten-Free Irish Soda Bread won’t disappoint!

What You’ll Need

  • 4 cups gluten-free all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup raisins
ALLERGENS: Buttermilk, Egg, Butter

Method

Step One

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Grease a baking sheet lightly with some of the melted butter.

Step Two

In a large mixing bowl, combine the gluten-free all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir the dry ingredients together until they’re well blended.

Step Three

Combine in a separate bowl, the buttermilk and egg. Stir until the egg is fully beaten into the buttermilk. Add the melted butter and sugar to the buttermilk mixture, stirring well to combine.

Step Four

Add the buttermilk mixture gradually into the flour mixture, stirring continuously. Add the raisins and combine well to evenly distribute them through the dough.

Step Five

Turn out the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently for about two minutes, or until the dough forms a coherent loaf. Place the dough onto the prepared baking sheet.

Step Six

Bake in the preheated oven for about 40 to 45 minutes, or until golden brown and a skewer inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack before cutting into slices and serving.
