About Gluten-Free Parker House Roll

If there’s one word that most accurately sums up the essence of the Gluten-Free Parker House Roll, it would have to be ‘surprising’. This is a bread that redefines expectation, marries tradition with innovation, and most importantly for some, offers an exceptional gluten-free alternative for those who have dietary restrictions, but crave the satisfaction of breaking open a warm, fresh roll.

Gluten-Free Parker House Roll

A Twist On A Classic

The Gluten-Free Parker House Roll takes its name from the original Parker House Roll, first created in the 19th century at the historically renowned Parker House Hotel in Boston. The birthplace of many culinary delights, the hotel’s most famous contribution to gastronomy is undoubtedly this distinctively shaped roll. However, the original recipe capitalized on the rich, dense texture that gluten provides to traditional bread.

This version, on the other hand, has been meticulously crafted to maintain the characteristic taste and texture of the classic Parker House Roll, while being completely devoid of gluten. Through the clever substitution of ingredients such as rice flour, tapioca flour, and potato starch, a delightfully rich and tender bread emerges – a gluten-free marvel sure to seduce the senses of even the most discerning lover of baked goods.

Perfect Dining Companion

Because of their buttery richness and soft texture, these rolls would not be out of place at a sumptuous Thanksgiving dinner, accompanying a hearty roasted turkey, or even as part of a Sunday roast. Of course, just as the original Parker House Roll was often enjoyed on its own, this gluten-free rendition can likewise hold its own as a snack, or even breakfast, toasted and slathered with a generous helping of strawberry jam.

The brilliance of the Gluten-Free Parker House Roll lies not merely in its nostalgic nod to its historic roots, but also in its bold embrace of dietary inclusivity. More than a mere imitation, this gluten-free bread redefines what’s possible when tradition and innovation are kneaded together and baked to perfection.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted unsalted butter
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1/2 cup tapioca flour
  • 1/2 cup potato starch
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons xanthan gum
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Additional melted butter, for brushing
ALLERGENS: Milk, Yeast, Eggs, Butter

Method

Step One

Start by warming the milk until it’s just lukewarm. This is to allow the yeast to activate. It should not be too hot as it can kill the yeast, nor cold as it will not activate the yeast. About 110 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal. Depending on your method, this can take from 20 seconds to 1 minute. Set it aside.

Step Two

In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar. Stir until everything is well mixed. Now, let this mixture sit for about 5 to 10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy. This is an indicator that your yeast is active and ready to use.

Step Three

To the yeast mixture, add the melted unsalted butter, three large eggs, and apple cider vinegar. Mix until all the ingredients are well combined. This should create a slightly thick, smooth mixture.

Step Four

In a separate bowl, mix together the rice flour, tapioca flour, potato starch, xanthan gum, baking powder, and salt. Stir until the ingredients are well combined. This will be your gluten-free flour mixture.

Step Five

Slowly add the gluten-free flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing as you go along to prevent any lumps from forming. Once all the dry ingredients are added, continue to mix until your dough is smooth and well combined. It will be a bit sticky, which is normal.

Step Six

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. While the oven is heating, divide up the dough into small pieces and shape them into rolls. Place these on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Step Seven

Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes or until they are golden brown. Once they are done, take them out of the oven and immediately brush them with additional melted butter. This gives them a nice shine and adds extra flavor.

Step Eight

Let the rolls cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your Gluten-Free Parker House Rolls!
