Gluten-Free Sourdough Bread

A Well-Rounded Loaf

Gluten-Free Sourdough is a versatile bread that can cater to a plethora of culinary preferences. Whether it’s being served as part of your morning breakfast toast, providing a perfect base for a delicious sandwich, or accompanying a hearty soup in the colder months, this bread comfortably sits on any table. And although it’s gluten-free, it doesn’t compromise on taste or texture in any way.

What Makes it Unique?

Traditional sourdough is known for its unique tang and complex flavors, and this gluten-free version is no different. The gut-healthy sourdough starter adds a rich depth of flavor you won’t find in ordinary bread, boasting a distinct tangy taste that sourdough lovers are sure to enjoy. But the real stars of the show are the diverse gluten-free flours and the xanthan gum which gives this bread its structure and delightful chewiness.

Another noteworthy addition is the apple cider vinegar that adds to the tanginess and aids the yeast in the leavening process. These elements, coupled with your staple bread ingredients like warm water, sugar, salt, olive oil, and eggs, result in a beautifully textured, golden loaf that can only be described as ‘artisanal’.

No Compromise on Taste and Health

Adopting a gluten-free diet for health reasons doesn’t mean you have to give up on this beloved food item. In fact, Gluten-Free Sourdough offers the same delicious flavors while reducing possible allergic reactions or sensitivities to gluten. Plus, it’s a great source of nourishment, providing plenty of dietary fiber and nutrients to your diet.

There’s no denying that Gluten-Free Sourdough is an intelligently crafted, versatile bread suitable for a range of dishes and dietary needs. It’s the perfect accompaniment to a comforting bowl of chicken soup or the hearty vegetarian lasagna. Regardless of how it’s served, this bread never fails to impress with its delicious tang and artisanal quality.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 cup of gluten-free sourdough starter
  • 3 cups of gluten-free all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups of warm water
  • 2 teaspoons of xanthan gum (omit if your flour blend already contains it)
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar
  • 2 large eggs
ALLERGENS: eggs

Method

Step One

In a large bowl, combine your gluten-free sourdough starter with the warm water. Stir them together until they are well mixed.

Step Two

Once your sourdough starter and water are well combined, add your gluten-free all-purpose flour, xanthan gum (unless your flour blend already contains it), sugar, and salt to the bowl. Stir all these ingredients together until they’re well mixed.

Step Three

Next, add your olive oil, apple cider vinegar, and eggs to the mixture. Stir everything until the mixture is smooth and fully combined.

Step Four

Once your dough is well mixed, cover your bowl with a dish towel and let it sit at room temperature for about 3 to 5 hours. This allows the sourdough to ferment and rise.

Step Five

After your dough has rested and risen, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). While your oven is preheating, transfer your dough into a greased baking pan.

Step Six

Place your baking pan in the oven and bake your bread for about 45 minutes, or until the top of your bread is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when you tap it.

Step Seven

After your bread is done baking, remove it from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, remove your bread from the pan and place it on a wire rack to finish cooling completely.

Step Eight

Finally, once your bread is completely cooled, slice, serve, and enjoy your homemade gluten-free sourdough!
