I have an insatiable appetite for discovering the hidden treasures in the world of cuisine – the exotic, the traditional, the comforting, and the downright extraordinary. Green Pea Soup with Indian Spices

A Culinary Dance

Largely known for my love of tapas and tropical cocktails, this might seem a little offbeat, but it’s a culinary dance I adore. The Green Pea Soup with Indian Spices combines healthy, fresh green peas with a symphony of spices commonly found in Indian cuisine. The result is a soup that’s robust, full of character, and strikingly vibrant – mirroring the energy of Miami’s dance culture I teach and live by.

Health Benefits

But it’s not just about flavor. This soup is packed with health benefits too. Green peas, for example, are loaded with fiber and antioxidants which are beneficial for your overall health. The spices – turmeric, ginger, and cumin – have medicinal properties, helping to reduce inflammation, aid digestion, and boost immunity. They form a potent combination that’s as good for your body as it is for your taste buds.

And let’s not forget about the coconut milk. It gives the soup a creamy texture, but it’s also a great source of healthy fats.

Fusion Possibilities

Now onto the fun part – pairings! Much like partnering up my students in a salsa class, this soup predominantly showcasing Indian spices, can handily cross into different culinary traditions. Given its full-bodied flavor, it pairs well with lighter, more refreshing dishes. In true Eva fashion, try it alongside a simple, citrusy ceviche or as a spicy prelude to a paella. Done this way, this soup can easily evoke the delightful chaos – the dance, if you will – of Miami’s culinary scene, where the city’s diverse cultures find common ground through shared meals.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 2 pounds fresh green peas
  • 6 cups vegetable broth
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • Fresh cilantro leaves, for garnish
ALLERGENS: Garlic, Onion

Method

Step One

Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the chopped onion into the pot and sauté until it becomes translucent.

Step Two

Add the minced garlic and grated fresh ginger into the pot. Sauté everything together until the ginger and garlic becomes fragrant.

Step Three

Add in the turmeric powder, cumin seeds, coriander powder, and red chili powder. Mix everything well so that the spices evenly coat the onions, garlic, and ginger.

Step Four

Then, add the fresh green peas into the pot and stir everything to combine. Allow the green peas to cook for a few minutes until they become slightly soft.

Step Five

Pour the vegetable broth into the pot and stir once again. Bring the soup to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let the soup simmer for about 15 minutes, or until the peas are completely soft.

Step Six

Turn off the heat and let the soup cool slightly. Then transfer to a blender or use an immersion blender to blend the soup until it is creamy and smooth.

Step Seven

Return the soup to the pot and stir in the coconut milk. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Heat it over medium heat until the soup is hot.

Step Eight

Serve this Green Pea Soup with Indian Spices in bowls, garnished with fresh cilantro leaves.
