We’re diving into a dish that simply oozes a fusion of flavors today; our star recipe: Grilled Ahipa with Herbs. Believe me when I say: it’s a vegetable lover’s dream coming true.
A Door to a World of Flavor – Grilled Ahipa with Herbs
Despite my often flamboyant Caribbean and Spanish influenced cuisine, sometimes I like to take a detour from the customary to discover unique flavors. The Ahipa, also known as Yacón, a South-America native tuber, stole the show when I first learned of its delectable and subtly sweet taste. Running lines of similarity with jicama, ahipa takes on a bursting flavor when blended with fresh herbs and olive oil, grilled to perfection.
Suiting Up – The Balancing Act of Spices
The wonder of this recipe lies in its simplicity. A blend of exquisite olive oil, their counterparts being a fresh bouquet of rosemary, thyme and oregano, provides an earthy counterbalance to the inherent sweetness of Ahipa. The sea salt and pepper come into play to tantalize taste buds and zestful lemon not only adds a fresh twist but also enhances the performance of other ingredients.
Eating healthily never tasted so good, wouldn’t you agree? The Ahipa, besides being a hit on the tastebuds, is also a home-run when it comes to its health benefits. Bursting with fiber (great for digestion and weight-loss), and lower in calories, it’s a dream ingredient for fitness enthusiasts.
Serving Suggestions – What’s on the Side?
The earthiness of Grilled Ahipa with Herbs would be beautifully complemented by a main dish of light, white meat – I personally enjoy pairing it with lemon and herb chicken. If you’re eyeing vegetarian or vegan options, consider a quinoa-stuffed bell peppers recipe.
So, next time you’re planning your menu, slide in the Grilled Ahipa with Herbs for a refreshing change. Whether you are a serious vegetable lover, a grill enthusiast, or simply someone seeking adventure in the culinary world, this flavorful dish is a feast of colors and tastes waiting to be explored. Your taste buds will certainly thank you!
What You’ll Need
- 6 medium-sized Ahipas
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons fresh herbs (preferably a mix of rosemary, thyme and oregano)
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 lemons
- Additional herbs for garnish
Method
Step One
Preheat your grill on high heat. While the grill is heating up, prepare your ahipas by scrubbing them clean and patting them dry.
Step Two
Slice the top off of each ahipa to expose the flesh. Then, make several shallow slits on the cut side of the ahipas. This will allow them to better absorb the flavors of the oil and herbs.
Step Three
Next, slice your lemons in half and set them aside.
Step Four
In a small bowl, mix the olive oil, herbs, sea salt, and black pepper together. Rub this mixture onto the ahipas, ensuring to get it into the slits you created earlier.
Step Five
Place the ahipas cut-side down on the preheated grill. Grill them for about 10-15 minutes, or until they are nicely charred and tender. Remember to turn them occasionally to ensure even cooking.
Step Six
While the ahipas are grilling, place the lemon halves cut-side down on the grill as well. Grill them until they are slightly charred, then remove them from the grill.
Step Seven
Once the ahipas are done, remove them from the grill and allow them to cool slightly.
Step Eight
Squeeze the grilled lemons over the ahipas and garnish with additional fresh herbs before serving. Enjoy your Grilled Ahipa with Herbs!
