Grilled Breadfruit

A Burst of Health Benefits

There’s more to this recipe than its unique, delicious taste. The breadfruit, the star of this grilled dish, is an amazing source of vitamins and minerals. On top of its incredible palate-pleasing taste, this exotic staple offers a hearty amount of fiber, potassium, and vitamin C. Coupled with the heart-healthy effects of olive oil, antioxidant-rich cilantro, and a squeeze of gut-friendly lime juice, this recipe perfectly balances taste and nutrition. Recent studies even suggest that the components of this dish may aid in lowering blood pressure and boosting your immune system.

Flavors That Transcend Cultures

Grilled Breadfruit is one of those recipes that hints at a melange of flavors and cultures. It reminds me of the traditional Okinawan dish, Yaki-imo, grilled in its own skin until the flesh becomes irresistibly soft. The seasoning brings in the Seattle influence, with the use of bold, aromatic garlic and freshly-ground black pepper enhancing the breadfruit’s smooth, potato-like texture.

If you’re looking to pair this scrumptious dish with other meals, you’re in luck. It’s a versatile side that can complement a variety of main dishes. From grilled salmon sporting that Pacific Northwest vibe to a classical teriyaki chicken, Grilled Breadfruit elevates the entire meal experience.

Exploring new recipes has always been more than a passion for me; it’s been an adventurous journey savored bite by bite. I am thrilled to share my favorite dishes with you, filled to the brim with Pacific Northwest ingredients borrowing a page from my Japanese Cookbook. I hope you’ll find as much joy cooking Grilled Breadfruit as I do!

What You’ll Need

  • 1 large breadfruit
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro
ALLERGENS: None

Method

Step One

Start by preheating your grill to medium-high heat.

Step Two

Cut the breadfruit into 1-inch thick slices. If you prefer smaller portions, you can also cut the slices into halves.

Step Three

In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil, sea salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. This will be the marinade for the breadfruit.

Step Four

Brush the breadfruit slices with the marinade, ensuring each slice is well-coated.

Step Five

Place the breadfruit slices on the preheated grill. Cook for about 15-20 minutes or until the breadfruit is tender and has nice grill marks, flipping it once halfway through cooking.

Step Six

While the breadfruit is grilling, mix together the fresh lime juice and chopped cilantro.

Step Seven

Once the breadfruit is done grilling, remove it from the grill and immediately drizzle the lime juice and cilantro mixture over the hot breadfruit. The heat from the breadfruit will help infuse it with more flavor.

Step Eight

Let the breadfruit cool for a few minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld together. Enjoy your Grilled Breadfruit!
