Grilled Meat with Avocado Leaves

The Culinary Journey

While my heart resides on the Atlantic coast attending to my ever burning love for seafood, there’s an insatiable curiosity that ventures beyond the familiar. There was an unforgettable summer I took my daughters, Erin and Samantha to Mexico. We witnessed first-hand how an everyday dish was taken to new heights by subtly infusing it with the smoky, anise-like flavor of avocado leaves. Upon our return, we adapted the technique and created our own New England version of the Grilled Meat with Avocado Leaves.

The Health Benefits

Cooking with avocado leaves not only imparts a delicious and unique flavor to the meat, but also comes with a slew of health benefits. The leaves are rich in antioxidants, fiber, and minerals that are ideal for a wholesome lifestyle. They also contain compounds that have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Combined with the lean protein from chicken or beef, the healthy fats from the avocado and olive oil, and the Vitamin C in lemon juice, this dish is a nutrient-dense powerhouse.

Perfect Pairings

The Grilled Meat with Avocado Leaves is a versatile dish that can be paired with various sides. Consider serving it with a vibrant, citrusy black bean and corn salsa or a refreshing cucumber salad. It also pairs well with classic New England dishes like a hearty clam chowder or a lobster salad. Complex or simple, this grilled meat dish will shine through in any culinary company.

In celebrating this beautiful dish, we not only applaud the harmonious fusion of different culinary traditions but also the power and beauty of simple, wholesome ingredients. I’m here to assure you that, just like the powerful tides of the Atlantic, the flavours of our Grilled Meat with Avocado Leaves will leave a lasting impression on your palette.

What You’ll Need

  • 2 pounds of chicken or beef
  • 6 fresh avocado leaves
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 2 avocados, sliced
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish
ALLERGENS: Chicken, beef, garlic, olive oil, avocados

Method

Step One

Season your chicken or beef with salt and pepper to taste. Ensure that the meat is fully covered for maximum flavor.

Step Two

In a large pan, heat your tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is heated, add your minced garlic and sauté until the garlic becomes fragrant.

Step Three

Add your seasoned meat to the pan and cook thoroughly, ensuring all sides are evenly browned. This should take approximately 5-10 minutes depending on the thickness of your meat.

Step Four

While your meat is cooking, prepare your avocado leaves by rinsing them under warm water and patting them dry. Once your meat is cooked, place your avocado leaves on top of your meat in the pan. Cover the pan and let it cook for another few minutes, allowing the flavor of the avocado leaves to infuse with the meat.

Step Five

While your meat is finishing cooking, slice your avocados and sprinkle them with fresh lemon juice. This will prevent the avocado from browning and also add a bit of fresh flavor.

Step Six

Once your meat is done, remove it from the heat and let it rest for a few minutes to let it soak up any remaining juices and flavors. Just before serving, top your meat with your sliced avocados and garnish with fresh cilantro to taste.

Step Seven

Serve your Grilled Meat with Avocado Leaves while it’s still hot and enjoy its unique, fresh taste!
