Why I Love Greek Grilled Pork Skewers with Mediterranean Spices
From the salty sea breezes of my Maine hometown where seafood reigns supreme to the rich, fragrant aroma of Mediterranean spices — there’s something magical about the way food has the power to transport us. My recipe for Grilled Pork Skewers with Mediterranean Spices provides that culinary journey, treating your taste buds to a mosaic of flavors that marry into a harmonious, delightful dish.
East Meets West in the Kitchen
Growing up on the Atlantic coast, my culinary repertoire has often been an amalgamation of local produce and global inspirations. With these grilled pork skewers, I’ve found a way to indulge my love for vibrant seasonings that traditionally grace Greek cuisine. Infused with classic herbs and spices like oregano, rosemary, and thyme – and punched up with the warm, earthy notes of coriander and cumin – every morsel sings with flavor. Skewered between pieces of colorful bell peppers and hearty red onion, this dish brings the Mediterranean coastline to your dinner table in the most delicious way.
A Tip from the Experts
While every dish I create holds a personal touch, I’d be remiss if I didn’t nod to Chef Diane Kochilas. Esteemed for her expertise in Greek cuisine, her recipes have been a valuable source of inspiration when exploring Mediterranean flavors.
These skewers are especially reminiscent of traditional Greek souvlaki, sharing similar char-grilled succulence and aromatic seasonings. I like to serve these skewers alongside a fresh Greek salad or some warm, fluffy pita bread. A dollop of homemade tzatziki sauce would also complement the skewers beautifully.
Carving out my culinary path has been a delightful journey filled with taste-inspired globetrotting – from my coastal hometown’s seafood specialities to the rich flavors of other countries. And in the end, it’s not just about the delicious food I get to enjoy or share with my daughters, Erin and Samantha. It’s also about how recipes like these Grilled Pork Skewers with Mediterranean Spices connect us with different cultures, opening our eyes and taste buds to the wonderfully diverse world of cuisine out there waiting to be savored.
What You’ll Need
- 2 lbs pork loin, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 red bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 green bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 large red onion, cut into 1-inch pieces
- 12 wooden skewers, soaked in water for 30 minutes
- Lemon wedges and fresh parsley for garnish
Method
Step One
Cut the pork loin into 1-inch cubes and set aside.
Step Two
In a large bowl, combine 3 tablespoons of olive oil, 1/4 cup of lemon juice, 4 cloves of minced garlic, 1 teaspoon of dried oregano, 1 teaspoon of dried rosemary, 1/2 teaspoon of dried thyme, 1/2 teaspoon of ground coriander, 1/2 teaspoon of ground cumin. Add salt and black pepper to taste.
Step Three
Add the pork cubes to the mixture. Mix until the pork is completely coated with the marinade. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
Step Four
While the pork is marinating, prepare your vegetables. Cut 1 red bell pepper, 1 green bell pepper, and 1 large red onion into 1-inch pieces.
Step Five
Soak your wooden skewers in water for about 30 minutes. This will prevent them from burning when grilled.
Step Six
On each skewer, alternate adding pieces of marinated pork, red bell pepper, green bell pepper, and red onion.
Step Seven
Heat your grill to medium-high heat. Once hot, add the skewers and cook for approximately 3 minutes per side or until the pork is cooked through and the vegetables are slightly charred.
Step Eight
Remove the skewers from the grill and let rest for a few minutes. Garnish with lemon wedges and fresh parsley before serving. Enjoy your Grilled Pork Skewers with Mediterranean Spices!
